Abstract

287,302. Salthouse, E. Feb. 24, 1927. Turning.-A device for tapering the ends of wooden rods such as broom shanks, the spindles of chairs, other furniture. &c. comprises a conical casing 1 having in its upper side a slot 5 through which a knife-blade 7 projects and in its lower side a pivoted member 10 adjustable by a screw 13 to vary its distance from the knife and so determine the angle of the taper produced on the work. Adjustment of the knife is permitted by lateral slots therein through which pass screws 8 for securing it to a flange 6 on the casing, the edge of the knife being preferably at a slight angle to the axis of the casing. The casing is formed as an oblique cone, the top side being parallel to the feet 2 and the base 4 being vertical, and the cone is preferably elliptical so that all vertical sections are circular. The device may be secured to a bench, wall &c. by the feet 2 or may be mounted in the rotary spindle of a lathe.
