Abstract
286,823. Davis, N. R., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. Jan. 1, 1927. Induction furnace. - In uniting metals such as iron or steel, tungsten, molybdenum &c. to or by means of a metal of lower melting point such as copper, silver, gold &c., the parts to be united are heated by electriccurrents induced peripherally in and around their abutting surfaces by a high frequency magnet - field, the effective dimensions of the parts in relation to their specific resistances and melting- points being proportioned so that the metal of higher melting-point is heated by induction above the melting-point of the other metal, which is heated to its melting-point by induction and also by conduction and radiation from, the first metal. The process is carried out in presence of fluxes, an inert or reducing atmosphere or in a high vacuum of the order of a few microns pressure with a current frequency preferably of the order of 1 million cycles per second. The parts 25, Fig. 8, to be welded are placed on a refractory support 22 of silica or alundum resting on a grid 26 in a glass tube, which is sealed by wax &c. in a groove in a ring 25 on a tube 24 connected to a vacuum pump. A short longitudinally movable inductor coil 21 surrounds the tube 20.
