Abstract
286,452. Barker, W. H. March 1, 1927. Sorting on interrupted shoots. -In machines for separating coal &c. of the kind in which the materials are caused to slide down an inclined shoot provided with a series of gaps, the feed of the material from a shoot a to the upper plate b of the separating shoot is controlled by a roller c or endless moving band arranged above the plate b so as to ensure a uniform drop of the material. The surface of the roller or band may be of metal, hard woven, felted, or other suitable fabric or rubber. Preferably, the supply of material to the lower part of the shoot a is controlled by a star wheel m working in a recess l, or by a reciprocating jigger. In the apparatus described, provision is made for successive separating operations, the middlings passing to the shoot h being fed by the roller &c. i on to the plate j. The plates b and j are preferably made of glass, and jets of air from nozzles k are used to facilitate the operation.
