Regulating.-In Diesel or like engines, the ignition pressure and temperature are maintained constant by varying the quantity of the air charge so that, as the speed of the engine increases, the pressure of the air available for compression is reduced to sub-atmospheric pressures The variations in the air charge may be obtained by throttling the air-inlet passage, varying the lift of the air-inlet valve, or varying the time of closing of the air-inlet valve during the suction stroke. In two-stroke engines, the air-inlet to the crank case is throttled. Fig. 2 shows an airinlet valve 7 actuated by a cam-operated lever 8, the fulcrum 10 of which is formed by the end of a lever 11 adjusted by the governor 5. In other forms, the governor is connected to the air-inlet throttle, or to an axially-movable cam for varying the timing of the air-inlet valve. Hand control may supplement the governor control, and the valves may be of the poppet or sleeve type. According to the Provisional Specification, a variable portion of the air charge may be rejected during compression by adjusting the timing of the exhaust or inlet valves or of a special outlet valve, or by throttling the exhaust outlet.
