Abstract

283,035. Munro, H. April 23, 1927. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Laying pipes.-Drains are formed in the ground and lined with sheet metal lining by means of a drain plough provided with means for carrying the lining, doubling it, and delivering it into the ground, the lining being anchored at one end and drawn off the plough as the latter progresses. The drain is made by a plug 1 carried by a hollow coulter plate 2 adjustably attached to a pivoted beam 3 which is provided with a supporting shoe 19 and is adapted to be raised by a rack or by a winch 17 on a wheel frame 3<a>. The lining strip 5 is made up into a. roll 6 and is passed through rollers or dies 7 which double it with its edges facing forwards and downwards. It then passes through a passage 9 and over a core 10 in the hollow plate 2, being finally widened out transversely by a suitably shaped part of the core 10. Soil is pressed down on the lining by a share 14. The final shape of the lining may be as shown in section in any one of Figs. 7, 8, 9, and 11. Longitudinal and transverse slits may be formed in the lining strip to facilitate doubling and entry of water into the drain. The edges may also be curved inwardly before the strip is made up into rolls 6. Lubrication may be provided where the strip engages the core 10 and plate 2. The core 10 may be omitted. The doubling-rollers 7 are driven by chain gearing 29, and may be toothed to engage slots or corrugations in the lining strip. A driven wheel provided with teeth or flattened parts may be mounted in the hollow plate 2 to assist in moving the lining strip. Two separate strips may be used for lining one drain. A second strip is indicated at 25 in Fig. 7. A coulter may be mounted in front of the plate 2. According to the Provisional Specification the lining may be made of material other than sheet metal, its edges may overlap, and it may be shaped entirely above ground or entirely below the ground surface.
