Brushes; brush - holders. -A brush-holder is fitted with a device for indicating the pressure with which the brush is forced against the commutator or slip-ring. In the form shown, the device takes the form of a rod 14, with index notches 15, carried by the brush 1. The brush is urged through the box 4 by a compression spring 10 bearing at its lower end on a brush follower 12, to which the index rod is secured, and at its upper end on a sleeve 11 in a movable yoke 8. This yoke has inturned extensions 9 travelling in grooves 6 in the sides of the holder structure 3 and, under the action of the spring, it enters one or other of a series of grooves 7 in the face of the structure 3. The rod 14 protrudes through the sleeve 11 so that inspection of the projecting notches 15 enables the spring pressure to be known. To alter the spring pressure, the front edge of the yoke 8 is pressed down to rock it about the projections 9 and free it from the groove 7 in which it happens to be engaged. It is then moved up or down and re-engaged with another groove 7 to give the required pressure. The member 3 is secured to the machine by any means, such as by screws entering the holes 13.
