Rotary machines; embossing-machines. - Designs, symbols, and the like are printed or indented in colours on wooden boxes &c. by means of a rotary machine to which the sides, or, boxes, are fed from an adjustable container 7 by means of a chain 24, which passes over a slotted table 5, and over a roller arranged under a printing or embossing roller 11. The printing or embossing roller 11, Fig. 8, is formed with a, series of apertures 11<a>, and the printing or embossing surface, or surfaces, is or are fixed to the roller 11 bv means of clamps secured in the apertures 11<a>, and rings 47, 48 guide the box sides during the printing operation. An adjustable front gate 35 prevents the feeding of more than one side at a time, and all the devices are driven by a motor arranged at the side of the roller 11. The roller 11 may be resiliently mounted, or a box side 7<a>, Fig. 7, may be mounted on a resiliently supported panel 50 below which springs 52 are provided to permit of the printing of boards of various thicknesses. Inking-apparatus.-The printing or embossing surfaces on the rollers 11 are supplied with ink by resilient distributing or transfer pads 46 on a cylinder 10 which receive the ink from ink-pads 39, Fig. 6, made of chamois, felt, or the like, on a cylinder 12 fitted with one or more internal reservoirs 36 corresponding to the different colours to be applied. The pads 39 are shaped to correspond with the areas of the printing-surfaces to be inked thereby, and they are held in position by clamps 42 which are slotted to permit of longitudinal adjustment relatively to the securing bolts 42 received by perforations 44 in the cylinder 12. The reservoirs 36 are filled through a stopper 37, and non-return valves 38 govern the flow of ink to the pads.
