Abstract

280,618. Kesterton, H. M., and Harley, H. H. July 23, 1926. Two-stroke-cycle engincs.-In a cross-connected engine, air compressed in the crank case g, Fig. 1, passes through two transfer passages n to two inlets n<2> ou opposite sides of the cylinder mounted on the case g; the inlets n<2> are in the same plane as the exhaust port m and form a layer between the combustion products and the new charge. In the two-cylinder engine shown the mixture for the cylinder B is compressed in an annular pump chamber f formed in the cylinder A., the mixture being transferred through the passage k, port j and inlet port j<1>; a similar arrangement is used for the mixture for the cylinder A. Slippers on the large diametered parts of the pistons control the mixture and air inlet ports h, i. In a modification air is admitted to each crank case through a groove q<1>, Fig. 3, in the crank disc q, the disc rotating in front of an air inlet pipe p. The air enters the power chamber through ports s in the piston and corresponding recesses in the cylinder wall. Grooves u, t<2> in the piston control admission to and delivery of the mixture from the pump chamber. In further modifications the groove q is used as a cam to control a mixture admission valve; or a rotary valve driven from the crank shaft may be used. Poppet or sleeve valves may be used to admit air to the crank case, or in the engine shown in Fig. 3 a sleeve valve driven from the crank shaft and surrounding the pump piston r may be used to control the distribution of the air and mixture.
