Driving-chains with separate joint pins.-In chains having alternate links consisting of plates b<1>, b<2> connected together by two hollow bushes a, the plates are forced on to the ends of the bushes and are then subjected to a mechanical operation which causes the metal of the plates around the holes to be forced into one or more grooves formed in the ends of the bushes. The grooves may be circumferential only, as at c<1>, c<2>, Fig. 1, to prevent movement of the plates along the bushes, or may be spaced around the bush, as shown at h<1>, h<2>, Fig. 11, in a plate from which a bush is coiled, whereby rotation of the bushes in the plates is prevented, or may be both circumferential and spaced either as shown at c<1>, c<2>, Fig. 28, or at c<2>, h<2>, Fig. 24, or an incomplete circumferential groove may serve both purposes. The bushes may be provided with shoulders f<1>, f<2> for the plates to rest upon, and the notches or grooves h<2> may be half the thickness of the plates, as shown in Fig. 11, or of their full thickness, as shown in Fig. 24. The ends of the bushes may lie flush with the plates as shown in Fig. 1, or may project therefrom. Several shapes of grooves and notches are described.
