Driving machines.-The spindle of a drilling or like machine is driven from an electric motor which will run at two speeds in either direction or at two speeds in a forward direction and at a quick speed in a reverse direction. the speed and direction of rotation of the motor being controlled by one or more switches. When an A.C. motor is used the stator has two windings C, D, Fig. 1, the former being for low speed and the latter for high speed, the supply from the mains E being controlled by a reversing switch A and a speed-controlling and starting switch B. When a D.C. motor is used the speed is controlled by a switch B, Fig. 2, in parallel with a resistance. G which is in series with the shunt field winding. F. A is tHe reversing switch and H is a series steadying-winding which is introduced if necessary. The two speeds in either direction are stated to be used for drilling large and small holes, and the slow forward and quick reverse speeds are for tapping and backing out.
