Speed maintaining systems.-A number of alternating-current motors 3 driving separate elements 1, 2 of paper-making or like machinery are maintained in a predetermined speed-relation by feeding the stators with, say, three-phase current from common mains 6, 7, 8, and also feeding the rotors with three-phase currents of adjustable frequency, which va:ries for each machine as its speed varies. Each motor may, as shown, drive through friction discs 22, 23 a revolving commutator 26 having its segments joined to resistances and receiving direct current from mains 13, 14. Three brushes 25 tapping off three-phase current are connected to slip-rings 15 belonging to the stator of the corresponding motor. The speed ratio of the motors is altered by sliding the friction discs, and the speed of the whole set is altered by varying the speed of the alternator 9 which feeds the bus-bars 6. 7, 8.
