Abstract
274,978. Potter, H. S. May 4. 1926. Drawings to Specification. Cased forms; tubes.-In making hollow bars or rods such as mining drill steels from hollow billets, a metal lining is united by a spraying operation or by electro-deposition to the bore of the billet prior to rolling into bar form so as to protect the surface of the bore from damage during subsequent rolling by the mandrel, sand core or metal core methods and also to prevent rusting of the finished drill by water in the mines. The lining may consist of copper, nickel. or rustless steel or iron. The bore is first cleaned by sand blast and mav then be coated by metal from a spraying nozzle on an arm rotated by a turbine, the nozzle being inclined to the arm or being provided with a deflector plate. The thickness of the lining may be rendered uniform by reaming or pressing by a polishing operation e.g.- by pushing a mandrel or ball therethrough. Any cracks formed during the rolling operation may be removed by relining the bar by electrodeposition. A nickel lining serves as a lubricant to facilitate rolling on a mandrel or withdrawal of a metal core. A finished steel may be sprayed with a bitumen paint and deposits of silica therein may be removed by a jet of compressed air.. Specification 208,777 is referred to.
