Abstract

273,079. Bailey, A. W. June 14, 1926. Hand-wheels.-Finger-grip ridges b are formed on the celluloid or like sheath c of a motor-vehicle steering- wheel or other hand-wheel rim a by threading flexible material e, such as stranded wire. cord, or string, through spaced transverse holes d, prior to the application of the sheath c, and drawing the wire &c. taut. The holes d are located on a pitch-circle smaller than the mean diameter of the rim. As applied to a tubular metal rim, the wire &c. is threaded in a continuous length, passing obliquely within the rim a from one pair of holes d to the next, and the ends f, f<2> are knotted to hold it taut. The ends a<2>, a<3> of the tube are then united by riveting to a sleeve g. The cores d<2> of the ridges b may alternatively be formed by separate lengths of wire &c. each pair of holes d, the knots being pushed into the holes. This construction is applicable also to solid rims.
