Boxes; packing, metallic; packing, removable casings for.-A steam-engine stuffing-box of the kind in which metallic packing is contained within a removable box, consists of an inner sealing ring a a carrier ring c located within the seating ring, a thrust pad d between the carrier ring and the cover e<1> of the main packing box e, a partially-severed white metal packing ring g; and two packing rings e<3>, e<4> each consisting of four segments with tangential joints held against the rod by springs e<10>, the outer ring e<4> being provided with axial springs e<8>. An end ring h is formed with a spherical seating on the inside of the stuffing-box cover i to allow of lateral movement of the rod.
