Abstract

269,922. Frank, J. April 22, 1927. Borehole apparatus. -A boring tool comprises cutters 15 with hooked upper ends for engagement with the lower end 14 of a yoke 9 carried by a rod 6 which is pressed upwardly by a compression spring 5, the cutters being held in conection with the yoke 9 by a member 11 with downward projections loosely engaging recesses in the cutters, and by a block 10 provided with balls 20 which are pressed into recesses in the parts 9, 11 by a rubber or spiral spring; a member 16 depending from the housing 2 of the apparatus causes the cutters to move outwardly when they assume their upper position, Fig. 1, while when the cutters are moved into their lower position, Fig. 2, they are movable inwardly for passage through the casing tube, recesses in the cutters then accommodating the member 16. Slots 4 are provided in the housing 2 to receive a key &c. by which the rod 6 and cutters are moved to their lower position. Overlapping extensions 21 at the lower end of the cutters engage the wedge-shaped lower end of the member 16 when the cutters are in their upper position, and at the same time projections on the upper ends of the cutters engage recesses 12 in the housing 2; further, when in this position, dovetail projections on the cutters engage similar recesses at the sides of the member 16. For chipping operations on damaged pipes at the bottom of the borehole. the cutters 15 are replaced by a wedge-shaped cutter 18, Fig. 8, and a flat sided member 17.
