Abstract

267,747. Marks, E. C. R., (Oil Well Supply Co.). May 11, 1926. Borehole apparatus.- To facilitate fishing operations for the re. lease of stuck tools during well-drilling operations, the drill rope is cut adjacent to the tools by a device provided with cutters on itr, lower end and adapted to be placed on the rope and lowered into the well together with rearwardlyplaced means for operating the cutters. A serving device for binding the cut end of the rope may also be provided. As, shown, the cutting device A comprises a block 5 provided with an upwardly projecting guide 12 and with cutters 8 pivoted at its lower end ; a slot 6 permits the block to be placed over the drill rope E, the slot being then closed by a strip 10 held by pins 11. Above the cutting device is the serving device comprising a block C preferably in two parts 25, 25<1> with a longitudinal slot by which it may be placed over the drill rope E and guide 12, the slot then being closed by a removable strip; the block C contains vertically movable wedges 29 co-operating with horizontally movable wedges 30, 30<1>, the latter having interfitting fingers 31, Fig. 10, and surrounding serving material 34, preferably of sheet metal, which is held in position by lugs 35. Above the block C is a hammer B which has a longitudinal slot adapted to receive the rope E and guide 12 on which it is held by split rings 20. The hammer B, serving device, and cutting device are lowered together into the well by a cable 18 until the cutting device contacts with the stuck tools D. The hammer is then reciprocated bv the cable 18 and first actuates the serving device to bind the material 34 round the drill rope E. The serving device may be omitted or may be made integral with the cutting device.
