Winch-actuated hoists with guided platforms. -Guides for a hoisting platform o adapted to be raised and lowered through a ship's hatchway f are formed by one or more ropes d fixed at one end to a shore structure a, depending in a bight around pulleys h on a base j in the hold, and secured at the outer end to a suspended weight m so that the ropes d are taut as the vessel rises and falls. As shown, the rope d is attached to a winding drum e on an arm of a staith a, and the base j can be raised by winding on the drum e with the weight m raised against a stop. The platform o is provided with tubular guides n running on the ropes d, and is raised and lowered by a winding engine r.
