Abstract

268,160. Custerson, R. April 29, 1926. Loud-speakers; diaphragms. - Relates to diaphragms, more particularly for loudspeakers, of the type comprising a stiff inner portion and a flexible edge provided with slits or slots, the outer portion of the edge being supported so as to leave a flexible cut, slit or slotted portion between the outer portion and the inner or body portion and consists in flexibly binding the slit or slotted edge, preferably with a thick coating of rubber solution or a soft cold vulcanizer. The slits are preferably not more than one-half of an inch apart. In some cases the peripheral portion of the diaphragm may be serrated or toothed, whilst, in other cases, the cut, slit or slotted portion may be formed separately from the inner portion. Fig. 2 shows a large conical diaphragm loud-speaker in which the peripheral edge of the diaphragm a has a number of radial cuts made therein so as to form tongues b', the outermost portions of which are bent out at right-angles to the axis of the cone and are secured to a supporting frame c. The Provisional Specification describes a modification according to which the peripheral portion of the diaphragm may be left intact and the cuts, slits or slots formed in a ring near the periphery.
