268,110. Tonks, G. H. Feb. 26, 1926. Doors for passenger vehicles.-In an omnibus or other road vehicle, a vertically hinged emergency exit door a,. Fig. 1, secured by catch mechanism b, Fig. 3, controlled from the interior of the vehicle, is combined with a hinged gangway h normally located within the closed door and adapted to be lowered outwardly automatically into a downwardly inclined position when the door catches are released. In the arrangement shown, sliding catches b are associated with a pull chain e and handle f within reach of the conductor or driver and the gangway h is mounted upon hinges i carried at the outer ends of spring plungers sliding in protective casings k. One or more blade springs s are fitted to the edge of the gangway h adjacent the hinges i, and similar springs t are fitted on the outer face of the gangway at its free edges, the latter springs either pressing against the door a in the normal or closed position or resting upon the ground in the lowered position of the gangway. The gangway is preferably formed of two portions m, n, the outer portion m falling by gravity either into a position adjacent to the part n when the door a is closed, or into an extended position as shown in Fig. 3 when the door is opened. A hand-rail consisting of a chain v and hinged lever u is automatically elected as the gangway is lowered, and at the same time an electric light x may be switched on.
