Luggage racks. - A foldable luggage-grid or carrier for a motor-vehicle has pivotally connected thereto a number-plate provided with means whereby the plate is automatically turned relatively to the carrier into a substantially vertical display position either when the carrier is being extended for use or being folded up into an inoperative position. In the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the carrier is formed of two frames 1, 2, of which the outer frame 1 is adapted to fold on to the inner frame 2 before the whole is swung into an out-of-use position, Fig. 5, against the back of the vehicle body, and the number plate 15 is arranged to be actuated, through the medium of bars 12 sliding through eyes 13, by movement of the guard-rail 6 of the carrier into or out of its operative position. The eyes 13 are arranged in brackets 14 on the inner frame 2, while the bars 12 are pivoted at their forward ends to a transverse bar 10 extending between extensions 9 of the guard-rail, and at their rear ends carry the number-plate which is fitted with angle-irons 17 pivoted at 20 to links 21 hinged to a frame 2. When the guard-rail 6 is folded down on to the carrier, the plate 15 turns to an horizontal position beneath the carrier, and is moved with the carrier to the final vertical position shown in Fig. 5. A modified arrangement in which the plate is actuated by movement of the guard-rail is shown in Fig. 6, in which links 21 are pivoted at their forward ends to the transverse rod 10 and at their rear ends to hinged brackets 18 carrying the number-plate. Further arrangements of linkages are described by which the number plate is controlled by the folding of the outer part of a two-part carrier upon the inner frame, or by the movement to the vertical or folded position of a carrier formed of a single frame only.
