Abstract

266,079. Grubb, F. H. Dec. 9, 1925. Bowden mechanism.-In operating means for Bowden and like mechanism, of the type which effects movements in opposite directions of the inner and outer Bowden members, a single operating lever is arranged to actuate one of the Bowden members directly and the other indirectly. In one form, applied to a handle bar brake control on a cycle, Fig. 1, the operating lever 2 which applies tension directly to the Bowden cable 13, acts to press the Bowden casing 10 in the opposite direction by bearing through a roller 9 upon a cam-shaped lever 3, the end 11 of which forms the seating for the casing. The lever 2 is bifurcated to straddle the lever 3, the levers being pivoted to a bar 1 carried by a clip 7 on the handle bar, and a spring 16 or the brake springs maintaining the inoperative position. In a duplex control device shown in Fig. 3, a pair of Bowden casings are seated in the ends of a cross-pin 34 slidable in a slot 35 in the operating lever and operated through a pair of links 30 by a lever 29 pivoted to the lever 2 and slidably fulcrumed upon a pin 33 mounted in a bracket 27 clipped to the handle bar. As applied to an in. verted lever control, Fig. 5, the Bowden casing 10 is operated through a lever 43 pivoted at 45 in the handle bar bracket 41 and connected by a pair of links 44 to the end 42 of the operating lever 2. In further modification, the operating lever and an arm carrying the Bowden casing are respectively secured to a pair of intermeshed toothed wheels or segments.
