1282710 Testing vehicles SPETSIALNOE KONSTRUKTORSKOE I NAUCHNOISSLEDOVATELSKOE BJURO MINISTERSTVA AVTOMOBILNOGO TRANSPORTA I SHOSSEINYKH DOROG LSSR 22 June 1970 [20 June 1969] 30251/70 Heading G1W A vehicle brake and traction testing apparatus has two sections 1, 2 one for a given wheel, each section having front and rear drums 4, 5, drums 4 being driven by or driving, through a coupling 8 and speed reducer 7, a motor-generator 9, drums 5 being coupled to an inertia mass 11, and sections 1, 2 being inter-connected through an electromagnetic coupling 22. Between drums 4, 5 are lifting platforms 12 each having a pair of guides 13, Fig.2 (not shown) supporting a low inertia roller 14 which lies in a recess 18 of platform 12 when the latter is in a raised position and which contacts the wheel (3) under the bias of a spring (17). To monitor traction, coupling 22 and couplings of the inertia masses 11 are engaged and drums 4, 5 set in motion by wheels (3). After the wheels have picked up speed masses 11 are disconnected from the drums 4, 5 and motorgenerators automatically switched to generating duty. The power produced by the vehicle engine is determined by means of a torque converter 10, and a road speed pick-up 15 connected to roller 14. The determine braking characteristics coupling 22 and couplings of speed reducers connected to inertia masses 11 are engaged and motor generators 9 energized to accelerate drums 4, 5 until the wheel speed reaches a desired value at which point the brakes are applied and the motor generators 9 are de-energized. Deceleration and effective braking distance are measured using pick-ups 15, 16. If the difference between the speeds of roller 14 and drums 4, 5 exceeds a predetermined value a wheel lock signal is generated which disengages couplings 8 and couplings of the masses 11.
