Handles with recessed-back retaining- devices for brushes. - Rotates to brushes of the kind having a bristle portion or stock detachable from the back and secured thereto by fastening means such as described in Specifications 225,437 and 233,210, and consits in providing the brush back with a plate or liner formed with, or to receive, the locking strip with nose-piece at one end and wall at the other, the plate having a bent or curled rim to make a good joint with the rim of the brush back. The plate or liner A, Fig. 1, secured by screws Q to the brush back has a channel B, the ends of which are turned up at 2, 2 and provided with holes to receive tne spring locking rod 3. The nose-piece I is formed by slitting the plate at E and bending the slit portion under. The wall G of the plate is bent over at G' to overlap the rim of the brush back, and the stock C is secured by the engagement of the prongs F with the nose-piece I and the end 3<a> of the curled end 12 of the spring rod 3. A cross-bar 2 on the rod has rearward projections J sliding along the channel B and forward projections K engaging other prongs L on the stock. In a modification the strip H, Fig. 5, carrying the spring rod 3 and nose-piece is separate from the plate A and is received in a recess in the brush back, being secured by Lugs to the plate A. The edges G of the latter are curled over at G<1> to engage resiliently with the rim of the brush back. In a further modification the brush back is formed on the plate or liner A by fixing a channelled strip N, Fig. 6, round the walls G, then covering the liner with cement &c. P, and placing over the latter a sheet metal back with its edges bent over the strip N.
