Abstract

257,019. Downer, G. F. May 20, 1925. Electrodes.-Plates for storage batteries are made by pasting the grids with a substantially inactive paste of lead oxide and water and afterwards sulphating by soaking in a solution of sulphuric acid, loosening of the paste upon immersion being avoided by having surface pores full of water at the instant of immersion. The paste may also include some porosity producing agent such as magnesium sulphate or porous organic material, and an inactive solution may be used in place of pure water. The same materials are used for both plates, and the lead oxide may contain from 40 to 75 per cent of litharge, the balance being red. lead. The pores may be produced by passing the pasted grids between rollers covered with woven wire cloth or canvas. The plates may be dipped in or sprayed with water before being soaked in the acid solution. They are then assembled in battery jars containing distilled water or very weak acid and a charging current is passed through the cells; when charging is complete, the acid in the cells approximates to the normal strength.
