Abstract

256,798. Tytus, J. B. Aug. 31, 1925. Rolling. - Thin and wide metal bodies are rolled out hot by passing the pieces successively from one stand of rolls to another and in each stand subjecting the piece to an active pass which is less convex than the active pass of the stand next preceding it. An ingot is finally reduced to sheets by passing through apparatus shown in diagrammatic elevation, Figs. 2 and 3, comprising a mill 3 to reduce the ingot to a slab which passes to a furnace 4 and is cut in shears 5 into pieces. The pieces are turned at right-angles by a table 7a, pass through rolls 7 in tandem to a furnace 9, are sheared at 10, and the sheared pieces are rolled out thin in rolls 12, 13. Pairs of the thin pieces are then matched into packs, passed to reheater furnace 16 and soaking furnace 17, cropped in shears 18 and finished in a succession of mills 20 with reheating furnaces 21.
