Abstract

212,886. Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, (Assignees of Rendleman, N. C.). March 15, 1923, [Convention date]. Rolling flanged bars.-Flanged structural members such as I- beams and channels are rolled by a process wherein a series of rolling operations is performed on the mid portion of the billet to produce lateral spreading followed by a further series of rolling operations to reduce the flanges. An example is given of the rolling of a ten-inch I-beam 10, the thickness of the web being 1¢ per cent of the depth, and the width of the flanges 30 per cent of the depth. The section of the billet 13 is approximately 5 inches square and successive stages in the formation of the final product are shown in Fig. 4. The process may be carried out in two stands of three-high mills, Fig. 1 being a broken section through the lower pair of mating rolls of the first stand, and Fig. 2 a similar view of the second stand. The positions of the references A to H indicate whether the blank passes above or below the middle roll. In the second stand the rolls work on diagonally opposite flanges of the blank, at the same time separating them and reducing the web to increase progressively the depth of the beam. The shape of the final pass is such that the beam may subsequently be completed by a single pass in a universal or other type of mill. The process enables a beam to be completed at one heat.
