Abstract

Railway locomotives, internal-combustion engine.-In a locomotive with a plurality of internalcombustion engines each driving the wheels through a separate changespeed gear, the speeds obtained by the use of these change-speed gears separately are different, so that a greater number of speeds is available for the locomotive. In the construction shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, the locomotive is propelled by four engines E - - H. driving through change-speed gears A - - D respectively. The speeds obtainable by the gears A . - D used separately are shown in the graphs of Fig. 3 - - 6 respectively, while Fig. 7 shows a graph of all the speeds. If the power units are all equal, the final speed obtainable by each is the same, as shown, but if the units are unequal then the final speeds will be different.
