FISH BAIT ADDITIVE
04 18
The present invention relates to a fish bait additive, and in particular to a fish bait additive comprising colourless synthetic oil. The present invention also relates to the use of a colourless synthetic oil as a fish bait additive, a fish bait composition comprising the fish bait additive, and to a method for preparing a fish bait composition comprising the fish bait additive.
BACKGROUND
Anglers are known to add vegetable oil or fish oil based flavourings and/or colourants to fish bait in order to enhance the visual attractiveness, flavour and/or smell of the fish bait with the intention of increasing the chances of attracting fish to the bait for a successful catch. The smell of the fish bait is however predominantly a result of the vegetable oil or fish oil present within the flavouring or colourant. Any additional flavouring present within the fish bait may be masked or tainted due to the presence of the oils.
Vegetable oils and fish oils are yellow or brown in colour and as such the use of these oils can affect the overall colouration of the fish bait. In particular, the overall colour of the fish bait may be dulled due to the presence of the vegetable oil or fish oil. This may have a negative impact on the visual attractiveness of the fish bait to a fish. It is difficult for an angler to prepare fish bait having the desired colour properties when vegetable oils or fish oils are present.
Anglers may also add vegetable oil or fish oil to fish bait in order to form sinking bait to catch bottom feeding fish. The presence of these oils within the sinking bait can however reduce the ability of the bait to sink to the bed of the lake or river. Furthermore, these oils may wash out of the bait during the sinking process which may cause the bait to return to the surface.
04 18
Vegetable oils and fish oils are known to congeal at low temperatures rendering the oils difficult or impossible to use during some extreme fishing conditions.
There is therefore a need for a fish bait additive which addresses 5 one or more of the above problems or disadvantages. In particular, there is a need for a fish bait additive which does not affect the overall colour and/or flavour of the bait. There is a need for a more versatile fish bait additive which can be used over a wider range of environmental conditions without congealing.
There is a need for a fish bait additive which may be used with sinking bait.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a fish bait additive comprising a colourless synthetic oil having a specific gravity greater than 1.
The fish bait additive may comprise a plurality of colourless 15 synthetic oils, in which one or each of the synthetic oils has a specific gravity greater than 1. Preferably, each of the synthetic oils has a specific gravity greater than 1.
The fish bait additive is preferably anhydrous.
The synthetic oil of the fish bait additive of the present invention 20 is colourless and therefore can be applied to fish bait without having any impact on the overall colouration. In particular, the colourless synthetic oil of the fish bait additive may be applied to fish bait without having any negative impact on the visual attractiveness of the fish bait to the intended fish catch.
The angler may select additional colourings to add to the fish bait 25 in order to achieve the desired colouration for attracting the intended catch. The presence of the colourless synthetic oil of the fish bait additive of the present invention has no visual impact on any additional colouring added to the fish bait.
The colouring may be added to the fish bait as part of the fish bait additive. The fish bait additive may therefore further comprise at least one colouring.
Alternatively, the colouring may added to the fish bait separately to the fish bait additive.
04 18
The synthetic oil is preferably flavourless. An angler may be able to select a desired flavouring for adding to the fish bait in order to attract the desired catch. The flavouring may be added to the fish bait as part of the fish bait additive. The fish bait additive may therefore further comprise at least one flavouring, such as for example krill flavouring or maggot flavouring.
Alternatively, the flavouring may added to the fish bait separately to the fish bait additive.
The synthetic oil preferably has anti-coagulant properties.
The or each synthetic oil preferably has a specific gravity of at least 1.05, more preferably of at least 1.1, for example about 1.155.
The fish bait additive of the present invention has a specific gravity greater than 1 and therefore will sink when placed in water, such as for example a lake or river. The speed at which the fish bait additive sinks to the base of the water is dependent on the specific gravity of the synthetic oil. The fish bait additive may be used with or to provide sink bait for use in catching bottom feeding fish located towards the base of a river, lake or sea.
The synthetic oil preferably comprises at least one glycerol ester.
The synthetic oil preferably comprises at least one glycerol triester.
The synthetic oil preferably comprises at least one ester formed from glycerol and an acetylating agent.
The synthetic oil may for example comprise triacetin.
04 18
The synthetic oil preferably has a melting point of less than -50°C, more preferably less than -70°C, especially preferably less than -75°C, for example about -78°C. The fish bait additive of the present invention has a low melting point and therefore may be used across a wide range of environment conditions with reduced risk of congealing or solidifying.
The fish bait additive consists of a colourless synthetic oil having a specific gravity greater than 1, and optionally one or more colouring and/or flavouring.
The fish bait additive may be for use with sinking bait. In 10 particular, the fish bait additive may be a sinking fish bait additive.
According to a further aspect of the present invention, there is provided a fish bait composition comprising fish bait and a fish bait additive as herein described.
The fish bait additive may be present within the fish bait in an 15 amount of at least 1% w/w, preferably at least 5% w/w, more preferably at least 10% w/w. The fish bait additive may be present within the fish bait in an amount of less than 90% w/w, preferably less than 75% w/w, more preferably less than
50% w/w, for example less than 40% w/w.
The fish bait composition may be a sinking fish bait composition to 20 attract bottom feeding fish. The speed at which the fish bait composition sinks towards the base of the water, such as for example a river, lake or sea, will depend on the overall specific gravity of the fish bait composition. The specific gravity of the fish bait composition will depend on: the specific gravity of the synthetic oil within the additive; the amount of fish bait additive present within the composition; and the specific gravity of the fish bait. The fish bait additive, and preferably the synthetic oil, is preferably retained within the fish bait composition during use and does not wash out during the sinking process. As a
04 18 result the fish bait composition is able to retain its attractiveness to the fish catch while sinking or present on the base of the body of water.
The fish bait composition may further comprise at least one fish bait flavouring and/or colouring.
The fish bait composition may consist of fish bait, a fish bait additive as herein described, and optionally at least one fish bait flavouring and/or colouring.
An angler may select the most effective flavouring and/or colouring for a particular species of fish and/or fishing location in order to increase the chances of a successful catch. The additional flavourings and/or colourings may be added to the fish bait composition without the fish bait additive having any effect on the overall colouring or flavouring of the composition.
The additional flavourings present within the fish bait additive or fish bait composition may be provided by amino acids, proteins, oils, fatty acids, sugars, or any combination thereof from natural or synthetic sources. The scent may include vitamins and other components that are attractive to fish. Preferably the composition comprises no more than 10% w/w, more preferably no more than 5%, for example 2.5% of flavouring.
The additional colourings present within the fish bait additive or fish bait composition may be provided by any suitable pigment. The colouring may be present at any suitable concentration within the composition. For example, the composition may comprise at least 0.1% w/w, preferably at least 0.2% w/w, more preferably at least 0.5% w/w of pigment.
The fish bait composition may be provided in any suitable form, such as for example in the form of pellets.
04 18
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of producing a fish bait composition comprising contacting fish bait with a fish bait additive as herein described.
The fish bait may be contacted with the fish bait additive by any 5 suitable method including, but not limited to, coating and/or spraying and/or misting and/or squirting and/or mixing. Preferably, the fish bait additive is applied by coating the fish bait.
According to a further aspect of the present invention, there is provided use of a colourless synthetic oil having a specific gravity of greater than
1 as a fish bait additive.
These and other objects, features, aspects, and advantages of the invention will become better appreciated and more clearly understood when considered in conjunction with the following description. It should be understood, however, that the following description, while indicating a preferred embodiment of the invention and numerous specific details thereof, is given by way of illustration and not of limitation. Many changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the embodiments of the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, and the embodiments of the invention are intended to include all such modifications.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Example 1 - Composition of Fish Bait Additive
The fish bait additive according to one embodiment comprises:
95% w/w triacetin; and
5% w/w Krill flavouring.
Triacetin is a colourless synthetic oil having a specific gravity of 1.155. It is to be understood that triacetin may be present within the fish bait additive in any suitable amounts. Preferably, triacetin is present within the fish bait additive at
04 18 an amount of at least 95% w/w, more preferably at least 97% w/w, for example
99% w/w. Although the Example refers to triacetin being present, it is to be understood that the additive may comprise any suitable colourless synthetic oil, or combination thereof.
The flavouring may be present within the fish bait additive in any suitable amounts. Preferably, the flavouring is present at an amount of no more than 5% w/w, more preferably no more than 3% w/w, for example no more than 1% w/w. Although the Example refers to the flavouring as krill flavouring, it is to be understood that any suitable flavouring or combination of flavourings may be included in order to attract a catch, such as for example maggot flavouring.
The fish bait additive does not include any additional components. It is however to be understood that in some embodiments, the fish bait additive may comprise one or more additional colourings and/or flavourings and/or colourless synthetic oils.
The fish bait additive is anhydrous.
Example 2 - Method of Preparing Fish Bait Composition
The fish bait additive of Example 1 is squirted onto fish bait pellets. The treated fish bait pellets are then left for a couple of minutes for the fish bait additive to absorb onto or into the pellets.
Optionally, the process may be repeated in order to increase the amount of fish bait additive applied to each of the pellets in order to increase the attractiveness of the pellets to the fish and/or to increase the specific gravity of the treated pellets.
It is to be understood that the fish bait additive may be applied to the pellets using any suitable process.
The fish bait additive of Example 1 has a low solidification temperature (melting point of triacetin is -78 °C) and as such does not thicken at low temperatures. As
04 18 a result the fish bait additive can be applied to the pellets over a wide range of low temperature weather conditions without congealing or thickening.
Example 3 - Fish Bait Composition
The overall colour of the treated pellets is unaffected by the presence of the fish bait additive of Example 1.
The treated pellets prepared according to Example 2 have increased weight compared to the weight of the original fish bait pellet due to the presence of the fish bait additive. As a result, the treated pellets may be distributed, for example catapulted, across a greater surface area of the body of water than the original fish bait pellets.
Furthermore, the specific gravity of the treated pellets has increased compared to the original fish bait pellets. As a result the sinking speed of the treated pellets has increased when compared to the original fish bait pellets. It is to be understood that the sinking speed of the composition will depend on the specific gravity of the fish bait; the specific gravity of the fish bait additive applied to the fish bait; and the amount offish bait additive applied to the fish bait.
The presence of the fish bait additive on the pellets has also been found to prolong the stability of the pellets within water when compared to the original fish bait pellets.
The treated pellets are therefore able to sink with increased speed towards or to the bottom of the body of water whilst maintaining the integrity of the pellet in order to attract bottom feeding fish.
The treated pellets can therefore be used to improve the success rates, and in particular the yield, of a fishing expedition over a wider surface area of a body of water, and over a greater depth of a body of water, and across a wider range of environmental conditions when compared to conventional pellets.
The invention has been described with reference to a preferred embodiment.
However, it will be appreciated that variations and modifications can be effected by a person of ordinary skill in the art without departing from the scope of the invention.
