Vacuum closures for vessels are secured in position during boiling by a removable elastic ribbon a, of vulcanized soft indiarubber, stretched diametrically across the lid g and retained by buttons d, on or secured to, the vessel, which are engaged by holes b in the ribbon. As shown the buttons are secured to a spring strip c but they may be secured to brackets adapted to fit the flange of the vessel or they may be formed integral with the vessel.
