Abstract

255,292. Bean, T. R., and Taudevin, R. E. Oct. 20, 1925. Wave energy, utilizing.-Turbines enclosed in open-ended vertical cylinders are oscillated by the up and down motion of a ship and the power is transmitted to a propeller shaft or auxiliary machinery. A turbine A in a cylinder L is mounted on a shaft F carrying a bevel wheel B which drives pinions C which are free-wheel mounted in opposite directions on a shaft G which transmits power through gearing J to the shaft H of the propeller K. The blades of the turbine may be carried by a cylinder N to the end of which the bevel wheel B is also secured. In an alternative construction, the two free wheel pinions may be mounted on the turbine shaft to gear at opposite diameters with a fixed bevel on the shaft G. Power may be taken off this shaft for generating electricity which is utilized for auxiliary services or stored for propelling the ship in calm weather; also lathes and other machinery may be driven by belts or gears from the shaft. An auxiliary prime mover is provided for driving the propeller when the turbines or electric drive is inoperative.
