A Food Pack Formed from a Folded Blank
The present invention relates to a food pack formed from a folded blank forming a right triangular prismatic shape, the pack having a first face having a right angled isosceles triangle shape with a long edge and two shorter edges, a second face having a rectangular shape and being separated from one of the shorter edges by a fold line, a third face having a rectangular shape and being separated from the other shorter edge by a fold line, and a fourth face having a right angled isosceles triangle shape corresponding to the first face, the first and fourth faces being parallel to one another and on opposite sides of the assembled pack, each of the first and fourth faces having a fold-flat line from the right angle and bisecting the respective face allowing the pack to fold flat, the fourth face being formed of a first panel separated from the second face on the side opposite to the first face by a fold line and a second panel separated from the third face on the side opposite to the first face by a fold line, each of the first and second panels having a flange which is separated from the respective panel by a fold line, the flange providing a sealing face along the long edge of the fourth face.
Such a pack will subsequently be described as “of the kind described”. Packs “of the kind described” are disclosed in W02008/025982 and GB2397573.
The pack supplied to the customer is folded in half along a fold-flat line for ease of transportation. The sandwich producer opens up the pack to a prismatic configuration and fills the pack while this is held in a press. A lid is then fixed to a peripheral flange. Such a pack has proved highly successful in practice as it is very simple to use.
This pack is not intended to be hermetically sealed. However, a hermetically sealed version of the pack is disclosed in W02008/025982.
Whilst this pack has been extremely successful, a problem which can occur in a small number of cases is that, as the lid is brought over to press against the flanges, the pressure of the lid on the flanges can cause the face to fold slightly inwards along the fold-flat line which means that the flange is out of position when the heat is applied to join the flange to the lid.
According to the present invention a food pack of the kind described is characterised in that one of the panels and its associates flange extends across the fold-flat line in the fourth face, this panel and associated flange being configured to fold along the fold flat line when the pack is folded flat, and the other of the flanges stops short of the fold-flat line, such that there is a gap between the flanges, the gap being offset from the fold-flat line.
Because the gap is offset from the fold-flat line, when the flange is folded outwardly, any inward pressure on the fold-flat line of the fourth face as the pack is filled and the lid folded into place is resisted by the flange which extends across the fold-flat line as the flange is well able to resist this force which is effectively a bending movement in the plane of the flange. This provides additional rigidity during the filling and lid sealing process. The pack is still able to fold flat along the fold flat line which extends through one of the panels and its associated flange. Whilst it may seem counterproductive to have a fold line extending through a flange, given that this flange is folded into a position generally perpendicular to the fourth face to provide the sealing face, the presence of the fold flat line in this flange does not affect the structural rigidity of the flange in terms of its ability to resist inward deformation of the first face for the reason mentioned above.
Such a design is an improvement on our existing Freshpack design in which the flanges are spaced apart from one another at the fold-flat line such that, as mentioned above, there is little to resist inward pressure on the fourth face.
Our hermetically sealed pack shown in WO 2008/025982 has a completely different configuration. The fourth face is again provided in two panels, but, in this case, the flanges on the two panels overlap. One of these stops short of the fold flat line, while the other extends across the fold flat line. The one which extends across the fold flat line does not fold when the pack is folded flat as the two panels in the fold flat region are joined by a film to film contact between the two faces. The panel with the flange which extends across the fold flat line does therefore not need to be folded to achieve the fold flat configuration as the other panel is folded back on itself to make the film to film contact. This design therefore does not have a gap between the flanges as these overlap and does not have a fold through a flange. All of these features are necessitated by the requirement for there to be, at all junctions, a film to film contact in order to provide the hermetic seal.
-3Preferably additional flanges are provided at respective free edges of the second and third faces to join with the lid.
Preferably, the blank is a laminate comprising a layer of flexible material and a layer of film, wherein the first and second panels overlap one another and are connected by the flexible material on one of the panels being bonded to the film on the other panel.
An example of a pack in accordance with the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank from which the pack is formed;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the pack in a “fold flat” configuration; and
Fig. 3 is a side view of the pack in its erected configuration with the lid open.
The pack comprises a first face 1 which is in the shape of a right angled isosceles triangle with two shorter edges 3, 4 which are formed with score lines and a long edge 5 formed with a score line. The first face 1 also has a fold-flat score line bisecting the triangular face.
A lid 8 is formed on the opposite side of the longer edge 5. The lid 8 has a window 9 which is optional and can be of any shape. The window 9 is formed by a film which is laminated onto the card. As shown in Fig. 1, the card is the uppermost layer and the film is laminated to the side of the card facing away from the plane of the paper. The outer peripheral region 10 of the lid 8 will connect the flanges to close the pack as described below.
The fold flat line 6 extends across the centre of the lid 8 as shown in Fig. 1.
A second face 12 which is generally rectangular is provided on the opposite side of the short edge 3 and has a flange 13 separated from the edge 14 of the face 12 closest to the lid 8 by a score line. This structure is replicated with a third face 16 extending from the second short edge 4 and having flange 17. At the lower edge of this third face 16 is a tab 18 which folds onto the second face 12 to close the bottom corner of the pack. This is assisted by a web 19 of film which projects beyond the card.
The pack has a fourth face 20 as shown in Fig. 3. This is formed of two parts, namely a first panel 21 extending from the second face 12 and a second panel 22 extending from the
-4third panel 16. As can be seen in Fig. 3, there is a fold flat line 23 extending across the second panel 22 such that, in the finished pack, it is in alignment with the fold flat line 6 through the first face 1 and lid 8.
The second panel 22 extends beyond the fold flat line 23. On the other hand, as seen in Fig. 3, the first panel 21 stops short of the fold flat line 23 as can be seen in Fig. 3 where its outer edge 24 is short of the fold flat line 23.
In order to partially assemble the pack from the blank, the tab 18 is folded up and the second and third faces 12, 16 are brought together at the apex 30. Heat is applied to the blank at this point to seal the tab 18 to the film on the first face 12. At the same time, the fourth face is formed by a similar bonding process in which an overlapping portion 31 of the second panel 22 is bonded to the first panel 21.
In this form, the partially assembled pack is then folded flat along fold flat lines 6 and 23 into the configuration shown in Fig. 2. A stack of containers in this configuration are supplied to an end user.
An end user will then unfold a pack, place it in a die which has an equilateral triangle prismatic shape corresponding to the shape of the pack. The pack is then filled with a sandwich before the lid is folded over and sealed.
At the top edge of the fourth face 20 is a sealing flange made of a short flange portion 40 which extends across a top edge 42 of the first panel 21 and a long flange portion 42 which extends across the top edge 43 of the second panel 22 beyond the fold flat line 23. A web 44 of film is retained in a corner of the blank between the overlapping region 31 and the long flange portion 41. This web 44 forms a seal between the flange portions 40, 41 and the lid 10 in the finished container. As can be seen in Fig. 3, there is a gap 45 between the flange portion 40, 41 in which part of the web 44 is visible.
Because this gap is offset from the fold flat line 23, when the short 40 and long 41 flange portions are folded downwardly and outwardly from the upright position shown in Fig. 3 to allow the lid to be brought into place, it can be seen that any pressure applied into the plane of the page in Fig. 3 which would tend to cause the pack to buckle inwardly along fold flat line 23 will be resisted as the long flange portion 41 is, at this stage, angled with
-5respect to the fourth face 20 such that it will resist any such inward buckling. This allows the flange portions 40, 41 to hold the shape of the open container while the lid 8 is folded over and the film on the outer periphery 10 of the lid is bonded to the film on the flanges 13, 17 and flange portions 40, 41.

Claims (3)

CLAIMS:
1. A food pack formed from a folded blank forming a right triangular prismatic shape, the pack having:
a first face having a right angled isosceles triangle shape with a long edge and two shorter edges;
an integral lid separated by a fold line from the long edge of the first face; a second face having a rectangular shape and being separated from one of the shorter edges by a fold line;
a third face having a rectangular shape and being separated from the other shorter edge by a fold line; and a fourth face having a right angled isosceles triangle shape corresponding to the first face, the first and fourth faces being parallel to one another and on opposite sides of the assembled pack;
each of the first and fourth faces having a fold-flat line from the right angle and bisecting the respective face allowing the pack to fold flat;
the fourth face being formed of a first panel separated from the second face on the side opposite to the first face by a fold line and a second panel separated from the third face on the side opposite to the first face by a fold line;
each of the first and second panels having a flange which is separated from the respective panel by a fold line, the flange providing a sealing face along the long edge of the fourth face;
characterised in that one of the panels and its associated flange extends across the fold-flat line in the fourth face this panel and associated flange being configured to fold along the fold flat line when the pack is folded flat; and the other of the panels and its associated flange stops short of the fold-flat line, such that there is a gap between the flanges, the gap being offset from the fold-flat line.
2. A food pack according to claim 2, wherein additional flanges are provided at respective free edges of the second and third faces to join with the lid.
3. A food pack according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the blank is a laminate comprising a layer of flexible material and a layer of film, wherein the first and second panels overlap one another and are connected by the flexible material on one of the panels being bonded to the film on the other panel.
