253,205. Stone & Co., Ltd., J., Hodgson, H. C., and Paramor, A. L. March 13, 1925. Starting, facilitating. - In priming apparatus for centrifugal &c. pumps comprising an exhauster h connected to the suction or delivery side of the pump p and an automatic valve device v between the pump and exhauster to prevent water from reaching the latter, the device v comprises a ball valve r and a slide valve n<1> so arranged that when liquid enters the chamber v the ball rises and closes the valve n<1> to prevent liquid from passing through the pipes y, w to the exhauster. When the liquid falls in the chamber v, the valve r descends and a spring z, acting on a head u<1> on the valve spindle, opens the valve n<1>. The valve r when seated prevents air from passing through the port q<1> to the pump. The exhauster h is driven from the pump shaft through friction gear b, c and a clutch which is automatically disengaged, when the pump is primed, by a rod 14 of a piston in a cylinder 11 exposed to the delivery pressure of the main pump or an auxiliary pump connected to the suction side of the main pump. The rod 14 actuates a lever connected to the clutch.
