Description

A LASH ADJUSTER AND ROLLER FINGER FOLLOWER
Technical Field
The present disclosure relates to a magnetised Roller Finger Follower (RFF) and/or a magnetised lash adjuster used to prevent the two dislodging from one another during the assembly of a valve train assembly for an engine. The present disclosure also relates to a method of manufacturing either of the components and a method of assembling either or both of the above mentioned components.
Background
A valve train is generally included within an internal combustion engine (ICE) to control the timing of the cylinder valves which regulate the flow of inlet and outlet gases to and from the cylinders. The valve train typically comprises roller finger followers (RFF) which confer the valve movements prescribed by the engine cam shaft to the valve stems. A mechanical or hydraulic lash adjuster is typically incorporated into the valve train for each RFF which controls the pivot point of the RFF and allows for adjustments to be made, for example to account for valve wear.
During assembly of the valve train, the lash adjuster is assembled first. The RFF is then assembled and rests on top of the lash adjuster and valve. The RFF is not initially fixed in position and hence when the cam shaft is assembled into the valve train, the RFF may be dislodged from the lash adjuster. This may require the valve train to be reassembled. To mitigate this risk, a clip is typically added to the valve train assembly with the specific purpose of maintaining the relative positions of the RFF and lash adjuster. Once the valve train is fully assembled within the engine, the clip has no further purpose. As well as carrying a significant cost, the clip can also impact on the design of the RFF or lash adjuster and impose a space envelope which must be considered in the operation of the RFF and valve train. For example the amount of material at the interface between the RFF and lash adjuster may have to be reduced to accommodate the clip and permit the required relative motion between the two components. The strength and rigidity of the two components may be reduced as a result.
An alternative which does not carry these disadvantages would be desirable.

Brief Description of the Drawings
For a better understanding of the present disclosure, and to show more clearly how it may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side view showing an internal combustion engine valve train assembly according to an example of the present disclosure; and Figure 2 is a side view showing a lash adjuster and a roller finger follower according to examples of the present disclosure.
Detailed Description
With reference to Figure 1, the present disclosure relates to an internal combustion engine valve train assembly 100. The valve train assembly comprises a valve 2, a finger follower, such as a roller finger follower 4, a cam 8, a cam shaft 10 and a lash adjuster 12. The valve 2 may be an intake or an exhaust valve.
The valve 2 comprises a valve seat (not shown) and a corresponding valve closure 2a. The valve further comprises a valve stem 2b. The valve closure 2a is connected to the valve stem 2b at a first end of the valve stem. The valve stem 2b is coupled to the finger follower 4 at a second end of the valve stem. A valve spring 6 may be disposed about the valve stem 2b and may be configured to provide a restoring force against any displacements imparted on the valve stem 2b by the roller finger follower 4.
The roller finger follower 4 has first and second ends 4a, 4b. In the example shown in figure 1, first end 4a is configured to couple with the valve stem 2b and second end 4b is configured to interface with the lash adjuster 12 such that the roller finger follower may pivot about the lash adjuster.
The roller finger follower also comprises roller follower 4c which, in the arrangement shown, is positioned between the first and second ends 4a, 4b. In alternative arrangements, the roller follower 4c may be positioned at or towards an end of the roller finger follower 4. In this case the roller finger follower 4 may be configured to couple with the valve stem 2b or the lash adjuster 12 at a point between the two ends. The roller follower 4c is configured to interface with cam 8. The roller finger follower 4 confers the movements prescribed by the cam 8 to the valve 2. Cam 8 is configured to provide prescribed displacements to valve 2 through roller finger follower 4 to produce the desired valve opening and closing times during the engine cycle.
With reference to Figure 2, the lash adjuster 12 generally comprises a body 14 and a plunger 16, the plunger 16 being movable, e.g. slidable, within the body 14. The lash adjuster 12 has first and second ends 12a, 12b. First end 12a is configured to interface with roller finger follower 4. Second end 12b is configured to connect to an engine housing (not shown) or any other appropriate structure. In the arrangement shown in figures 1 and 2, first end 12a is provided on the plunger 16 and second end 12b is provided on the body 14, however the inverse is also possible.
In operation, the length of the lash adjuster 12 can be altered, for example through the use of hydraulics or a mechanical screw. Altering the length of lash adjuster 12 affects the position and orientation of roller finger follower 4. This affects how displacements prescribed by cam 8 are conferred to valve 2. This can be used to adjust the valve displacements, for example to account for valve wear.
The lash adjuster first end 12a is configured to pivot about the roller finger follower 4 when assembled. This interface is shown in greater detail in Figure 2. In the example shown in Figure 2, the lash adjuster first end 12a comprises a first bearing surface that may be partially spherical. The roller finger follower 4 comprises a second bearing surface that may be partially spherical. The second bearing surface may be provided in a recess in the roller finger follower 4 which receives the lash adjuster first end 12a.
Referring still to Figure 2, the lash adjuster comprises a magnetic portion 20. The magnetic portion 20 may be provided at or near the interface with the roller finger follower 4. Additionally or alternatively, the roller finger follower 4 may comprise a magnetic portion 18. The magnetic portion 18 may be provided at or near the interface with the lash adjuster.
The lash adjuster magnetic portion 20 may comprise a magnetic material, such as a 35 permanent or semi-permanent magnet. The magnetic material may have been magnetised by applying an electro-magnetic field to the lash adjuster end 12a, e.g. aligning the magnetic dipoles of the lash adjuster material in the magnetic portion 20. Magnetising the lash adjuster may also be achieved by passing a magnet over the area of the lash adjuster to be magnetised. Alternatively, a magnet or an electro magnet may be provided as part of the lash adjuster. An electro magnet may be selectively energised, e.g. during assembly of the engine. Other methods of magnetising the lash adjuster may also be possible. In the embodiment shown in figure 2 the lash adjuster 12 is magnetically attracted to the roller finger follower end 4b as the roller finger follower may be constructed from a magnetically attracting material, such as steel. In an alternative embodiment, the roller finger follower may itself be magnetised by any of the methods described above for magnetising the lash adjuster or another method. In this case the lash adjuster may also be magnetised or may be constructed from a magnetic material and may thus be attracted to the magnetised roller finger follower.
The magnetic portion 18 and/or 20 may be magnetised by virtue of an automated process. The lash adjuster 12 or roller finger follower 4 may be placed in a die around which an electric coil is provided. Passing a current through the coil may magnetise the lash adjuster or roller finger follower. The lash adjuster or roller finger follower may then be removed from the die and replaced with a subsequent lash adjuster or roller finger follower for magnetising. The coil may extend around one or more lash adjusters or roller finger followers.
During assembly of the valve train 100, valve 2 and lash adjuster 12 are generally assembled first. Roller finger follower 4 is assembled subsequently to couple with the valve 2 and rest upon the lash adjuster 12. The cam shaft 10 may then be assembled and holds the roller finger follower 4 in place. As the lash adjuster 12 is magnetically attracted to the roller finger follower 4 at their interface, there is a reduced risk of the two components being dislodged during the assembly process.
It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that although the invention has been described by way of example, with reference to one or more examples, it is not limited to the disclosed examples and that alternative examples could be constructed without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
