The post 100 is part of a fall prevention apparatus 200 (see Figure 14) for use on the edge of a building, such as a multi-storey building undergoing work.
The support 100 is in the form of an elongate cylindrical post having a lower end region 101. A pair of L -shaped slots 104 is defined at the lower end region 101. Each slot 104 has a vertical portion 106 extending upwardly from a lower end 108 of the support 100 and a horizontal portion 110 extending transverse to the vertical portion 106 at the upper end of the vertical portion 106. The base 102 is in the form of an 'I' beam, having a central elongate upright web portion and upper and lower flange portions 114,116.
The attaching apparatus 10 comprises a holding arrangement 11 comprising an elongate locating member 12 which is substantially cylindrical in shape. The locating member 12 has a lower end portion 14, which constitutes a tubular fastening element. The lower end portion 14 defines a threaded bore 16 for receiving a fastening member in the form of a bolt 18 having a threaded shank 18A and a head 18B.
Referring to Figure 2, the locating member 12 defines a through passage 20 substantially at right angles thereto at a central region of the locating member 12. An elongate cooperating member in the form of a pin 22 is provided within the through passage 20 and extends outwardly from the locating member 12 at regions of the locating member 12 opposite each other. The pin 22 forms part of a bayonet fitting. The pair of opposed slots 104 in the lower end region of the support 100 form the other part of the bayonet fitting.
The support 100 is secured to the locating member 12 by disposing the support 100 over the locating member 12 so that the locating member 12 is received in the lower end region 101 of the support 100. The vertical portion 106 of each slot 104 receives a respective one of the oppositely extending ends of the pin 22.
When the pin 22 engages the upper ends of the vertical portions 106 of the slots 104, the support 100 can be turned about its longitudinal axis so that the ends of the pin 22 are received in the horizontal portions 108 of the slots 104.
The holding arrangement 11 further includes a receiving member 24 in the form of a sleeve, which is arranged around the locating member 12. In the first embodiment, shown in Figures 1 to 7, the receiving member 24 is formed of a plastics material.
The receiving member 24 defines a recess 26 for receiving the lower end region 101 of the support 100. The receiving member 24 has a bottom end member 28 defining an aperture 29 through which the locating member 12 can extend. Thus, when the locating member 12 is received in the support 100, the lower end region 101 of the support 100 is received in the recess 26 defined by the receiving member 24. The receiving member 24 defines a pair of opposed apertures 31 into which the opposite ends of the pin 22 are received to hold the pin on the receiving member 24.
The receiving member 24 has an upper rim 30 upon which is mounted an annular sealing member 32 for sealing against the support 100. The sealing member 32 provides the advantage in the embodiment described herein that, when the support 100 is attached to the base 102, concrete may be poured over the support 100 to form a floor. The concrete is prevented from falling into the recess 26 by the sealing member 32 sealing against the support 100.
An indicator arrangement 34 is provided on the receiving member 24. The indicator arrangement 34 comprises opposite pointed portions 36 which are directed away from each other.
The indicator arrangement 34 is disposed on the receiving member 24 with the pointed portions 36 in alignment with the longitudinal axis of the base 102. When so oriented, the attaching apparatus 10 is in the desired orientation for receiving the support 100, so that a barrier member (not shown) mounted on the support 100 is aligned lengthwise with the base 102.
In order to fasten the attaching apparatus 10 to the base 100, a hole 120 is first drilled through the upper flange portion 114 of the base 100. The threaded shank 18A of the bolt 18 is inserted through the hole 120, and is then screwed into the threaded bore 16 in the lower end 14 of the locating member 12. If desired, a washer may be provided between the head 18B of the bolt 18 and the underside of the upper flange portion 114.
The locating member 12 is tightened on to the bolt 18 and disposed so that the pointed portions 36 of the indicator arrangement are directed longitudinally along the base 102, as shown in Figure 5.
After the locating member 12 is secured to the base 102, the support can be attached to the base 102 by arranging the support 100 over the locating member 12 so that the locating member 12 is received in the support 100 and the support 100 is received within the recess 26. Thus, the lower end region 101 of the support 100 is disposed between the locating member 12 and the receiving member 24.
It is an advantage of the embodiment described herein that any slack between the support 100 and the attaching apparatus 10 is reduced. Also, installation is quick and easy.
A plurality of the support 100 can be attached to the base 102 in the same way as described above. A plurality of the attaching apparatus 10 are fastened to the base 102 in a spaced relationship along its length, and a respective support secured to each of the attaching apparatus. A plurality of barrier members can then be mounted on the supports 100.
There is thus described an attaching apparatus 10 for attaching a support 100 to a base 102, for example in the installation of a barrier arrangement for use during construction of a building.
Various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the locating member 12 can be omitted, and the receiving member fastened to the base 102 by means of the bolt 18 and a nut disposed within the receiving member 24.
An example of a second embodiment incorporating such a modification is shown in Figures 8 and 9. The second embodiment of the attaching apparatus 10 includes many of the features shown in Figures 1 to 7, and these features have been designated with the same reference numerals as the corresponding features in the first embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 7.
The holding arrangement 11 of the second embodiment of the attaching apparatus 10 is in the form of the receiving member 24. The attaching apparatus 10 further includes a fastening element in the form of a threaded nut 40 disposed on the bottom end member 28 of the receiving member 24. The nut 40 is arranged over the aperture 29 defined by the bottom end member 28.
The second embodiment of the attaching apparatus 10 also includes the sealing member 32 on the upper rim 30 of the receiving member 24. The pin 22 extends between the opposed apertures 31 in the receiving member 24.
The attaching apparatus 10 shown in Figures 8 and 9 is fastened to the base 102 by first drilling the hole 120 therein and inserting the threaded shank 18A of the bolt 18 through the hole 120. The receiving member 24 is then disposed over the shank 18A so that the shank 18A is received through the aperture 29. The nut 40 is then screwed onto the bolt 18A to tighten the nut against the bottom end member 28 and the head 18B against the lower face of the upper flange 114 of the base 102.
The support 100 can then be received in the recess 26 in the receiving member 24. The support 100 is secured thereto by causing the pin 22 to be received the into the L -shaped slots 104 in the support 100 and turning the support 100 about it longitudinal axis so that the ends of the pin 22 are received in the horizontal portions 108 of the slots 104.
When the support 100 is received in the recess, the seal 32 engages the support to prevent concrete falling into the recess 26.
The receiving member 24 of the second embodiment of the attaching apparatus 10 can be formed of a suitable metallic material, such as steel or aluminium.
Figures 10 to 12 show the attaching apparatus 10 with a carrying arrangement 50, which can be secured to the holding arrangement 11. The carrying arrangement 50 is provided to carry an elongate article 150, and attach the elongate article 150 to the elongate base 102. Portions of the elongate article 150 and the elongate base 102 are shown in Figure 12.
It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the elongate article 150 and the elongate base 102 are likely to be much longer than the portions shown in Figure 12. The elongate article 150 and the elongate base 102 could extend along the whole length of the side of a building.
The carrying arrangement 50 comprises an elongate carrying member 52, which may be in the form of a rectangular bar. The carrying member 52 may be formed of steel or other suitably strong and rigid material.
The carrying arrangement 50 comprises mounting means in the form of a mounting member 54 to mount the carrying member 52 on the receiving member 24. The mounting member 54 comprises a collar 56 extending around the receiving member 24 (see Figure 11).

The second securing member 76 defines a plurality of apertures 78, through a selected one of which a fastener, such as a bolt or a screw, can extend to fasten the second securing member 76 to the article 150.
The elongate article 150 is in the form of a trim for attaching to a building along the side of a floor. At ground level, a plurality of the attaching apparatus 10 are fastened to the base 102, and a respective carrying arrangement 50 is secured to the holding arrangement 11 of each attaching apparatus 10. The elongate article 50 is then disposed adjacent the base 102 parallel thereto.
The carrying members 52 are arranged so that each extends through a respective through hole 60 in the collars 58. A respective affixing member 62 is mounted on the free end of each carrying member 52.
Referring to Figures 12 and 13, each affixing member 62 is then fastened to the elongate article 150 by means of screws (not shown) extending through the apertures 70 in the flanges 68. The screws are screwed into the elongate article 150.
A respective one of the strap formations 72 is secured to each receiving member by arranging the annular first securing member 74 over each receiving member. Each elongate second securing member 76 is then secured to the article 150 by means of a screw extending through a selected one of the apertures 78 to be screwed into the article 150. The distance of the article 150 from the base 102 can be determined by selecting the appropriate aperture through which the screw extends.
The carrying member 52 is slidably received in each of the holes 60, 66. As a result, the distance between the mounting member 54 and the affixing member 62 can be adjusted to vary the distance between the article 150 and the base 102.
When the article 150 is attached to the base 102 as described above, the fall prevention apparatus 200 is secured to the attaching arrangements 10 and thereby attached to the base 102 also at ground level.
