Abstract
A bin has a receptacle 10 with hooks 14 on two opposed external walls 12 which can secure bags within the bin. There may be a dividing wall partitioning the bin and a bag 20 could be received either side of the dividing wall. A swing lid could have indications relating to one type of waste on one side of the lid and indications relating to another type of waste on the other side of the lid. The hooks 14 can pass through 13 the walls and be secured 16 internally. There could be a cover pivotally attached to the side wall biased by a spring to cover the hooks.
Description
Refuse Device
ii Field of the Invention
This invention relates to an improved refuse receptacle, or bin.
Background to the Invention
There is a general desire to keep the top of a bin liner clean so that upon removing it from the bin, a person does not get dirty hands. This is made difficult by many bin liners not being effectively retained at the open end of the receptacle and thus falling into the waste.
Summary of the Invention
Accordingly, the present invention is directed to a bin comprising at least one receptacle, wherein at least two hooks are provided, each on opposing sides of the external wall of the receptacle and extending externally of the receptacle. By placing hooks on the external wall of the bin, loops or handles on the liner, or bin bag, can be retained outside the bin, thereby reducing the risk of them becoming dirtied during use. This makes removing the liner more hygienic.
Preferably, the bin comprises a plurality of receptacles separated by a dividing wall. By having a plurality of receptacles in the bin, the bin can be used for sorting refuse, for example, into green or recyclable waste and non-recyclable or landfill.
Advantageously, a plurality of hooks are provided on each opposing sides of the external wall of the receptacle. Whilst thc bin may have a circular, elliptical, oval or polygonal cross-section, it is advantageous that it is an even-sided polygon, preferably a rectangle or square, and that the hooks are positioned on opposed side walls. This keeps the liner centred in the bin, thereby reducing the risk of waste passing down the side of the liner.
In a preferred construction, the at least two hooks each pass through the wall of the receptacle and are secured on the internal side of the wall of the receptacle. This provides a secure connection and reduces the risk of the hooks becoming detached.
An advantageous embodiment has the feature that the externally extending at least two hooks are each provided with a removable covem The removable cover reduces the risk of a person or animal catching their leg or clothing on the hook. It may be further advantageous that the cover is pivotally attached to the external wall of the bin and that the cover is provided with biasing means to cover the hooks. The cover may be hinged at a position below the hook with an opening in the upper surface so as not to interfere with the liner. The use of a spring mechanism or other biasing means, for example resiliently flexible plastics material, allows the cover to return to a default closed position.
Preferably, the bin is provided with a lid and, more preferably, the lid is a swing lid and the swing lid is provided with a first indication on one side and a second indication on the other side, wherein the indications correspond to the material that should be put in that side. Having a lid reduces odours and the risk of items inadvertently entering the bin.
Additionally, the provision of information as to what should be put in which side of the bin allows a user to quickly sort waste when disposing of it.
Brief Description of the Drawings
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way ofT example oniy, and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a diagram showing a perspective view of a first embodiment of a bin according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a diagram showing a side view of the embodiment of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a further perspective view of the bin of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a different perspective view of the bin of Figure 1; Figure 5 is diagram showing a second embodiment of the present invention; Figure 6 is an end view of the bin of Figure 5; Figure 7 is a further view of the bin of Figure 5; and Figure 8 is a third embodiment of the present invention.
Detailed Description of Exemplary Embodiments
Figures ito 4 show a bin 10 comprising a receptacle 12 having a rectangular cross-section and a tapered body diverging in an upward direction. The receptacle is provided with apertures 13 through which are positioned the ends of hooks 14. The hooks 14 are secured into the receptacle by connectors 16. The connectors 16 may be in the form of threaded members, for example nuts, that engage with a threaded portion of the hooks 14.
The hooks 14 are secured in a substantially downward facing direction such that the engaging portion of the hook 14 is accessible from bencath.
A first pair of hooks 14 is provided in a first wall of the receptacle 12 and an opposing wall of the receptacle is provided with a further pair of hooks 14 at substantially the same height and position as the first pair A bag 20 is provided, which has handle apertures. The body of the bag 20 is inserted into the receptacle 12 and the apertures are arranged to engage the hooks 14 arid thus retain the bag in the receptacle 12. A lid 18 is provided to the bin 10.
Figures 5 to 7 show a further embodiment of the present invention, wherein three hooks 14 are provided along the opposing sides of the receptacle 12. The three hooks 14 provide anchoring points for two bags 1 8a and 1 8b to he arranged within the receptacle 12. This allows for compartmentalising of the receptacle 12 so that different rubbish may be put into different bags thin the device. This makes recycling more convenicnt, particularly where inserting waste into one side of the swing lid 18 results in the waste S entering a first bag 20a and waste entering from the other side of the lid 18 results in waste entering the second bag 20K Figure 8 shows a further embodiment of the present invention, wherein a plurality of recesses 13 are provided to allow the position of the hooks to be set according to a user's preference. Additionally, the height-adjustable hook position may aliow a user to use different sized bags according to their preference.
Where the bin has an odd-number of sides, for example, a pentagonal cross-section, hooks may be provided on three or more sides to keep the liner central in the bin.
The receptacle may be provided with one or more internal dividing walls to provide more defined compartmentalisation. The dividing walls may extend above the receptacle to make sorting of waste easier in respect of inserting the waste into different compartments/bags.
A different style lid, for example a hinged lid or a foot-operated lid, may be desirable in place of a swing lid.
Plastic bags that are obtained from a supermarket may be used in the present invention, especially where non-liquid waste is put into the receptacle.
