Abstract

252,051. Forrest, C., N., Hayden, H. P., and Douthett, 0. R. Jan. 30, 1925. Cleansing-material.-Gilsonite is distilled and the distillate after purification is heated with sulphonating reagents such as a mixture, of oil of vitriol and fuming sulphuric acid, whereupon it separates into an acid sludge and residual oil. From the sludge on dilution with water, is obtained a middle layer having the general properties of sulphonic acids and which may be employed as a detergent, or a saponifying agent for fats &c.
