Abstract

A clasp 8 comprising two halves, 1 & 2, that are joined together by hooks( 4, fig 1) and slots (5, fig 1) around the end of a length of rope 5 to seal the end of the rope, via spikes 3, and create an adjustable rope loop 7. The two halves of the clasp may be connected along an adjoining edge by a hinge. The two halves of the clasp may be joined by screw fixtures.

Description

Adlustable Loop Clasp This invention relates to a device for replacing a tied slipknot in rope or cord.
A slipknot is a type of knot tied to one end of a length of rope to create a loop that tightens when tension is applied to the rope in the opposite direction to the loop. The loop can be increased or reduced in size by sliding the knot by hand. This adjustable loop can be placed around an object and tightened to provide a secure attachment.
However, a conventional tied slipknot is slow and difficult to achieve in uniformity during mass production. It also leaves a loose end of rope that may need to be heat sealed to prevent fraying.
To overcome these problems, the present invention proposes a clasp comprising two halves that join together around the end of a piece of rope, creating an adjustable loop, and sealing the rope end. The loop can then be adjusted in size by sliding the plastic clasp along the remaining length of rope. The area of the plastic clasp where the rope runs through is marginally smaller in diameter than the rope to create a resistance that will allow the clasp to remain in position when desired.
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 shows the internal surfaces of the clasp, Figure 2 shows how the rope is placed within the clasp prior to sealing the two halves of the clasp together, Figure 3 shows the clasp sealed around the rope, Figure 4 shows how the rope loop created by the clasp is adjusted in size.
In Figure 1, the top half of the clasp (1) and the bottom half of the clasp (2) are displayed with the internal surfaces facing upwards. The spikes (3) will be embedded into the rope once the clasp is sealed. The hooks (4) along the edge of the top half of the clasp (1) will be inserted into the corresponding slots (5) along the bottom half of the clasp (2) to permanently seal the two halves of the clasp (1&2) around a length of rope.
In Figure 2, a length of rope (5) is inserted into the lower half of the clasp (2). The rope end (6) is positioned inside the clasp on top of the two spikes (3) so that they are embedded into the rope.
In the direction away from the rope end (6) the remaining rope (5) continues out of the clasp, and then returns back into the lower half of the clasp (2) to form a loop (7).
In Figure 3, the two halves of the clasp have been pressed together to create a sealed unit (8) around the rope (5) and a loop (7) at one end of the clasp. The remaining rope (5) continues away from the loop, and passes through the sealed clasp (8). The area inside the sealed clasp (8) where the remaining rope (5) passes will be fractionally smaller in diameter than the rope itself to create a low level of resistance when adjusting the size of the loop (7).
Figure 4 shows how the loop (7) created by the sealed clasp (8) is adjusted for size. By pulling the rope (5) through the sealed clasp (8) in the direction of the loop (arrow A) the loop will be increased in size. By pulling the rope (5) through the sealed clasp away from the loop (arrow B) the loop will be reduced in size.

  1. Claims 1. A clasp consisting of two separate halves that are joined, using integral hooks and slots, around a length of rope, to seal one end of the rope, and create an adjustable rope loop.
  2. 2. A clasp according to claim 1, in which the two halves of the clasp are connected along one adjoining edge by an integral hinge.
  3. 3. A clasp according to claim 1, in which the two halves of the clasp are joined together by separate screw fixtures.
