251,264. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. April 25, 1925, [Convention date]. Addition to 247,583. Cyclic hydrocarbons.-In the production of liquid hydrocarbons by treating coal or other carbonaceous solids, tars, mineral oils, resins, bitumens or fractions or residues or components or cracked or hydrogenated products thereof under a pressure of at least 50 atmospheres with hydrogen or reducing gases containing free or combined hydrogen as described in the parent Specification and Specifications 247,586 and 249,501, [both in Class 32, Distilling &c.], tungsten, chromium, or compounds thereof are used as the catalyst. Mixtures with other catalysts or activating materials may be used, e.g. with molybdenum, cobalt, nickel, iron, copper, silver, aluminium hydroxide, magnesia, zinc oxide, and potassium carbonate. In examples, petroleum residues are passed with hydrogen over tungstic acid at 200 atmospheres and 450-500‹ C.; crude cresols are similarly treated at 500-550‹ C.; and brown coal producer tar is treated at about 500‹ C. and 200 atmospheres with a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen using chromium hydroxide as catalyst. Tungsten sulphide, chromium oxide, and chromic acid are also specified as suitable catalysts. Specifications 2306/14. [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], and 255,127 are also referred to.
