Abstract

Superheating by throttling. - A steam drying and throttle valve comprises a longitudinally movable sleeve valve which has a number of perforations 10 therethrough for drying the steam and slides on a coacting part 11 of the valve casing to control the number of perforations open for the passage of steam, a stop valve 12 to cut off the supply of steam, and means for byepassing the steam around the perforations while maintaining the sleeve in engagement with the coacting part of the casing. The coacting member 11 on which the sleeve valve slides is fitted with a stop valve seat 11<1> which is formed with a number of projecting guides 13 so that the sleeve valve may be moved clear of the coacting member 11 to give an open passage for the steam thereby byepassing the perforations. Fig. 5 shows a locomotive valve having a balancing piston 35 beneath which steam is admitted by a pilot valve 42 and which is thereafter raised by a pin 39 on the pilot valve stem 38. The stop valve 33 seats on a ring 31 formed with lugs 31' so that the perforated sleeve 28 of the valve may be moved to give a free passage for the steam. A cage formed of vanes 46 to break up the fluid into streams is carried by the valve with the vanes oppositely arranged on opposite sides.
