Abstract
250,752. Smith, N. K. April 6, 1925. Borehole apparatus.-A rotary carriage for boring wells comprises a base-plate carrying a flanged post 60 on which is mounted a sleeve 62 provided with jaw mechanism to grip one arm 51 of a pipe tongs. The sleeve 62 is slidable vertically on the front and rests on a spring 63. A housing 69, bolted over an offset portion of the sleeve, is provided with jaws forming a slot 74, and with an eccentric pin 76 fitting between two discs 75 which are rotated in the jaws by a lever handle, so that when one arm 51 of the pipe tongs is inserted in the slot, the pin 76 is forced into a notch in the arm 51 which is thereby held in position. To prevent the pin 75 from working loose, a pivoted latch 83 is swung down so that its stop 84 abuts against the handle 78 and holds its firmly. When the tongs are to be used in the reverse position in the jaw slot 74, the latch 83 is hinged over the other lug 80 so as to bear against the other side of the lever 78.
