Borehole apparatus. - Means for handling casing, drill pipe, sucker rods &c. in wells comprises a body member with relatively movable jaws which, during their movement from workholding to work-receiving position, move from a lower plane to a higher one. In Figs. 1, 2 and 5, the body A has a slot b to receive the drill pipe &c. and contains jaws C pivoted at 13; in moving from the work engaging position, Fig. 2, to the open position, Fig. 1, the jaws move upwardly in the body by co-operation with cam surfaces 29, 30. A U-shaped member D is slidably arranged in the body, its movement being limited by lugs 22 and slots 23; springs 25 act on lugs 24 on the member D to press the latter towards the jaws, which are yieldably held in the open position by the engagement of fingers 12<d> thereon with the ends of the member D, while they are positively locked in the closed position by engagement of the fingers 12d with cheeks 27 on the member D. Trunnions F receive suspension means, movement of the latter being limited by stops K. Drainage openings may be provided. In Fig. 4, pivoted members E are pressed by springs 35 so that noses 32 thereon engage flats 34 on the jaws to hold the latter yieldingly in their open positions, the noses engaging recesses 33 in the jaws to lock the latter positvely in their closed positions.
