Description
An Event Ticket The present invention relates to an event ticket. More specifically, the present invention relates to an event ticket having features effective to prevent counterfeiting.
Events, such as sporting occasions, concerts and the like commonly use uniquely printed tickets as means of authenticating who has paid for an event.
So as to be able to authenticate a ticket, the official tickets will commonly comprise one or more anti-counterfeiting feature(s) aimed at preventing unofficial copying of the event tickets. Such features can range from simple text to, for example, elaborately formatted text or pictures, holograms or a bar code, printed onto the ticket. Commonly, event tickets will now include a combination of these features.
The degree of security that many of these common anti-counterfeiting features provide has declined as the availability of software and electronic devices, particularly scanners and home printers, have become more common. The ability to copy and reproduce the printed content of an event ticket is progressively becoming easier and therefore the tickets need to become more sophisticated to prevent copying.
A further disadvantage of event tickets is that the tickets can be easily torn, crumpled and destroyed.
More elaborate anti-counterfeiting devices, such as those designed for use in bank notes or high value items are not suitable for lower value and shorter life items such as event tickets. Therefore, there is a requirement for an inexpensive and easily reproducible, but yet still effective, anti-counterfeiting feature for inclusion in such event tickets.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided an event ticket comprising a facing layer having a printable outer surface and a backing layer optionally having a printable outer surface, internal layers extending from the inner surface of the backing layer to the inner surface of the facing layer, the internal layers including an optical transmitting layer and an optical barrier layer partially covering the optical transmitting layer on one surface thereof, wherein the internal layers comprise a single metal optical barrier layer and the optical transmitting layer includes one or more section(s) not covered by the optical barrier layer.
The term optical barrier layer' when used herein should be interpreted to mean that said layer has a lower level of light transmitting for visible light than the optical transmitting layer.
The term single' in relation to the optical barrier layer' when used herein should be interpreted to mean that there is not more than one optical barrier layer in the internal layers of the event ticket. The term internal layers' when used herein is intended to be interpreted to mean all the layers of the event ticket that are between the inner face of the backing layer and the inner face of the facing layer.
The optical barrier layer may or may not be continuous. From this it will be understood that the optical barrier layer may be in the form of several discrete sections on the said one surface of the optical transmitting layer. Generally, the sections of the optical barrier layer not covering the optical transmitting layer form a specific pattern or indicia. The originator may specify this pattern or indicia so that it provides an unique identifying feature. Such a pattern or indicia may be applied by demetallisation of a metallised sheet. Such sheets are known to the skilled person and generally have optical transmitting polymer base sheets as required by the present invention. The process of demetallisation is known to the skilled person in the art of demetallisation.
Preferably, the metal optical barrier layer is opaque.
Preferably, the metal optical barrier layer is aluminium.
Preferably, the optical transmitting layer comprises a polymeric material.
Preferably, the polymeric material of the optical transmitting layer is selected from the list including polypropylene, orientated polypropylene (OPP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Preferably, the optical transmitting layer comprises a transparent polymeric material.
Preferably, the form of the optical transmitting layer is selected from the list consisting of a film, a sheet or a block. More preferably the optical transmitting layer is a film or a sheet. Most preferably the optical transmitting layer is a film.
Preferably, the internal layers comprise an aluminium coated polymer foil such as those that are well known in the art and which will from herein be referred to as a metallised polymer foil. Such foils are susceptible to caustic etching and may therefore have indicia or patterns formed thereon by caustic etching following the application of an appropriate resist layer.
Preferably, the outer surfaces of the backing layer and the facing layer are visible to the user in reflected light whereas, typically, the internal layers are not visible to the user in reflected light.
Preferably, the facing layer and the backing layer are the outermost layers of the event ticket.
Optionally, the event ticket comprises additional layers. Optionally, additional layers are between the internal surfaces of the backing layer and the facing layer.
Optionally, additional layers are external to the outer surface(s) of the backing and/or the facing layer(s).
Optionally, the additional layer(s) comprises an additional light transmitting layer. Optionally, the additional layer(s) comprises an additional light transmitting layer(s) arranged externally to the outer surface(s) of the backing layer and/or the facing layer(s). Preferably, the additional light transmitting layer(s) arranged externally to the outer surface(s) of the backing layer and/or the facing layer(s) comprises a transparent polymeric material. Optionally, the additional layer(s) comprises an additional metal layer(s) arranged externally to the outer surface(s) of the backing layer and/or the facing layer(s). Optionally, the additional layer(s) comprises an additional transparent polymer layer arranged immediately adjacent to the optical barrier layer.
Preferably, the backing layer and the facing layer aie substantially conterminous. Preferably, the backing layer, the facing layer and the optical transmitting layer are substantially conterminous.
Preferably, the event ticket is a laminate. More preferably, the event ticket is between a 2-and 8-ply laminate. Even more preferably, the event ticket is between a 3-and 6-ply laminate.
Optionally, an adhesive substance may be used to bond the layers of the event ticket at the interface(s) of the layers. As such, optionally, the event ticket may further comprise an adhesive substance.
Preferably, the facing layer and/or the backing layer are a cellulose based material. Preferably, the facing layer and/or the backing layer are paper or card.
Most preferably, the facing layer and/or the backing layer are card.
Preferably, the facing layer and/or the backing layer are thermal paper.
Generally, it is advantageous to have only one thermal paper layer so that a non-thermal paper backing layer may be superposed on the metal surface thus sandwiching the optically transmitting polymer layer between the metal layer and the thermal layer to prevent metal layer initiated arcing during printing of the thermal layer.
Preferably, the facing layer and the backing layer are light transmitting such that, when in use, the areas of the optical transmitting layer not covered by the optical barrier layer are visible in transmitted light. Preferably, the facing layer and the backing layer are translucent.
Preferably, the optical barrier layer, the facing layer and the backing layer substantially occupy different planes. As such, preferably, the optical barrier layer is not substantially embedded in the backing layer or the facing layer. Preferably, the optical barrier layer is not visible to the user in reflected light.
Optionally, the facing layer and/or the backing layer further include at least one window arranged such that at least a part of the sections of the optical transmitting layer not covered by the optical barrier layer are visible to the user in reflected light.
Preferably, at least one of the backing layer and/or the facing layer comprises a removable portion. Preferably, the removable portion is not adhesively bonded to the optical barrier layer or the optical transmitting layer.
Preferably, the backing layer and/or the facing layer further comprise at least one tab that extends externally away from the plane of the outer surface(s) of the backing layer and/or facing layer(s). Most preferably, the at least one tab is attached to at least one end of the removable portion such that in use the user can manipulate the at least one tab to remove the said at least one removable portion.
Preferably, the at least one removable portion comprises only one boundary not attached to the facing layer or the backing layer, wherein the remaining boundary lines of the at least one removable portion are perforated.
Preferably, the shape of the at least one removable portion is selected from the list consisting of a rectangle, a square and/or a rectangle. In one embodiment, the at least one removable portion is a triangle. Preferably, the at least one triangular removable portion comprises two boundaries that extend partially along two adjacent outer boundaries of the event ticket.
Preferably, the event ticket may comprise a perforated line. Preferably, the perforated line is a linear line. Preferably, the perforated linear line extends parallel to and spaced from one of the shortest boundaries of the event ticket.
In use, when the event ticket of the present invention is held to transmitted light the sections of the optical transmitting layer not covered by the optical barrier layer are visible to the user through the backing and or facing layer. As such, when used in such a manner, the specific pattern or indicia applied to the barrier layer will be visible through the event ticket, whereas, in general, when the event ticket is looked at in reflected light the said specific pattern will not be visible to the user. As such, the event ticket of the present invention provides an anti-counterfeiting feature.
Advantageously, the first aspect of the present invention provides an event ticket with substantially increased anti-counterfeit properties when compared to the prior art event tickets mentioned above. Specifically, in addition to reproducing the printed detail of the facing and/or backing sheets of an event ticket, the event ticket of the present invention requires a counterfeiter to replicate a plurality of internal layers sandwiched therebetween. The replication would require at least the production of a light transmitting layer, a metal optical barrier layer, the ability to combine these two or more layers and further the ability to replicate the sections of the light transmitting layer not covered by the metal optical barrier layer in the official ticket. Further still, the potential counterfeiter must possess the ability to combine all these layers into the final product. Another advantageous effect of the first aspect of the present invention is the increased structural integrity of the ticket provided by the polymer layer and as such increased resistance to intentional or accidental damage, such as tearing or crumpling.
According to the second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method for producing an event ticket according to the first aspect of the present invention, comprising the steps of: a) treating the metal foil surface of a metallised polymer foil with a resist layer corresponding to a pre-determined pattern or indicia; b) demetallising the portions of the metallised polymer foil not protected by the resist layer, preferably, by treating the metallised polymer foil with a caustic treatment agent; c) optionally washining the metallised polymer foil; d) laminating one surface of the metallised polymer foil onto a paper layer with a suitable adhesive; e) curing the paper laminated metallised polymer foil; 1) laminating the opposite surface of the metallised polymer film onto a second paper layer with a suitable adhesive; g) curing the paper laminated metallised polymer foil produced in step f); h) optionally processing the laminated paper of step g) in a slitting machine to produce the event ticket.
Suitable resist layers for metallised foils are known to those skilled in the art. A suitable resist layer is Vernis Demet.
Preferably, the caustic treatment agent is a caustic solution such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. Preferably, the caustic solution comprises sodium hydroxide.
Preferably, the polymer layer of the metallised polymer foil is placed against the interior surface of a thermal paper layer.
Preferably, suitable adhesives for laminating the metallised foil to the paper outer layers will be known to the skilled person. A suitable adhesive for both surfaces of the metallised foil is an isocyanate containing compound. Preferably, the suitable adhesive comprises diphenylmethane dhsocyanate (4,4-, 2,4'-mix). Preferably, the suitable adhesive comprises diphenylrnethane diisocyanate (4,4'-, 2,4-mix) and a hardener.
The invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective front view of a first embodiment of the event ticket according to the present invention.
Figure 2 shows a perspective rear view of a first embodiment of the event ticket according to the present invention.
Figure 3 shows a front view of a first embodiment of the event ticket according to the present invention.
Reference is first made to the first embodiment of the present invention as given in Figures 1 to 3, which show different viewpoints of an event ticket 102. The event ticket 102 is a laminate comprising three substantially planar, conterminous components; a facing layer 104, an anti-counterfeiting layer 106 comprising an optical transmitting layer 108 superposed on the facing layer 104 and an optical barrier layer coated onto the opposite surface of the transmitting layer 108 and a backing layer 112 superposed on the barrier layer coating 110.
The transmitting layer 108 is an optically transparent polypropylene sheet. The optical barrier layer 110 is an aluminium coating on the transmitting layer. The transmitting layer and barrier layer are available as a metallised film which can be purchased from Sarfil Polyester film (as Polyplex) or Gulf Packaging industries (as MET-i). Indicia or patterns are applied to the metallised foil by demetallisation. The demetallisation is effected by printing a lacquer resist of Vernis Demet printing ink (available from Sun Chemical) onto the aluminium surface of the metallised polymer foil to form a negative of the desired indicia or pattern and treating the lacquer coated metallised polymer with a caustic solution. The film is then rinsed with water to remove any remaining caustic. The dernetallisation may thus apply desired patterns or indicia to the anti-counterfeiting layer.
The polymer film surface of metallised foil with the required indicia or pattern applied thereon is then adhered to a sheet of thermal print paper using a diisocyanate adhesive adhesive (Novacote SF-3277/2 with Co reactant hardener CA-3278/7 available from Coim Deutschland GmbH). . The adhesive is given time to cure and the backing paper is then applied to the metal surface using the same adhesive. After curing, the laminate may be cut into suitable ticket size using a slitting machine.
Ticket printing may take place subsequently. However, it is also possible to print the ticket facing prior to cutting the sheets either after laminate assembly or before.
The facing layer 104, the optical transmitting sheet layer 110 and the backing layer 112 are sufficiently light transmitting that when the event ticket 102 is held up to transmitted light X the sections of the optical transmitting layer 108 that are not covered by the optical barrier layer 110 and form internal indicia or patterns are visible to the user viewing from the direction of arrow 114. The printed indicia 116 are also visible to the user. However, when the event ticket 102 is viewed in reflected light, such as in Figure 3, the said internal patterns or indicia are not visible to the user, but the printed indicia remain visible to the user.
The facing sheet is made from thermal paper so that the external surface thereof can be printed with event and optionally, advertising, sponsorship etc, indicia and/or patterns in the usual manner. In addition, the backing layer external surface may also be printed with supplementary information.
The Figures 1 to 3 are not to scale. As such, a user would not ordinarily be able to discern the individual layers identified by Y. Although, only a single optical barrier layer is present in the internal layers of the event ticket which allows for simplicity of construction and indicialpattern application further layers which may provide an optical barrier may be present on the backing layer and or facing layer in the usual manner if required for the event patterns or indicia.
