Abstract

249,974. Invernairn (W. Beardmore), Lord, and Chorlton, A. E. L. Feb. 7, 1925. Frames; cylinders, mounting.-An integral casing, constructed of a material having a low specific gravity and in and by which the cylinders are enclosed and carried and constructed as described, for example, in Specification 240,565, is strengthened to withstand the heavy stresses set up by the rotating parts, by horizontaltransverse and vertical stays or bolts of high tensile strength. The casing of aluminium alloy for example and particularly applicable to a lightweight high-speed aeronautical engines, consists of a single casting comprising two longitudinal side walls A, two end walls B and three transverse diaphragms C. Each of the side walls A may terminate at its lower edge as a girder D of box-section " fish-bellied " in plan and the diaphragms C may likewise terminate in box-sections F, an inspection hole E being provided on each side between each pair of diaphragms. Each girder F is recessed at G to receive the crankshaft bearing and is provided with ribs which serve to key the lower bearing cap J in two directions. The end walls B terminate at their lower ends with box-sections L provided with recesses M and key ribs N, O. The walls A, B and diaphragm C carry the cylinders and for this purpose are provided with horizontal plates Q, R having circular holes therein. The spaces between the cylinders, walls, and diaphragms form water jackets connected by holes S. The lower ends D of the casing are connected by transverse stay bolts T of which four are shown adjacent each girder F viz. two above and two below the crankshaft. Vertical stays are also provided connecting the crankshaft bearings to the cylinder heads U. These stays comprise four short bolts V, Figs. 2, 4, connecting the lower halves J of the main bearings to longitudinal pieces V<2> in the girders F, each of the pieces being connected by a bolt V<3> to a cross-bar W on the cylinder heads. The invention may be applied to engines of the V or other type.
