Knitting, methods of; stockings and socks.-The rib top, leg and heel of halfhose &c. are knitted as usual, down to the line 5, 8, widening is continued along the suture 5, 6, instep needles being taken in as required. At the point 6 about fourteen needles are withdrawn from action from either side of the widened piece and are taken in again by subsequent widening the suture 6, 10 being thus formed. Alternatively, the piece may be narrowed, the suture line being then formed at an obtuse angle to the suture 5, 6. The effect of these operations is to bring the instep well down into the foot portion so that the heel, foot and toe, which are preferably knitted of undyed yarn, do not show above the shoe. The angle between the foot and leg also more nearly approaches a right-angle than when a seamless heel only is made. The rest of the foot and the toe are knitted as usual.
