Abstract

A brassiere for use after surgery comprises two encapsulation cups 18 having means to attach padding material on the inside thereof. The padding material is preferably a gel or gel-like material and may be a silicone gel, an aerogel or a hydrogel. Gel pads 20 may be attached to the inside of each cup at a location that, in use, overlaps the scar or scars of a wearer or the areola of each breast of a wearer or both. The attachment means may comprise a hook and loop strip. One or more gel pads may be provided on the inner surface of the strap 22 extending between the cups. The brassiere may be used to support the breasts of a woman who has undergone breast augmentation.

Description

Support brassiere
Field of invention
The present invention relates to a support brassiere. More especially, the invention relates tc a brassiere that supports the breasts or breast of a woman who has undergone breast augmentation.
Background to the invention
Brassieres for use after surgery need to resist motion as much as possible. They must also provide good support and comfort to the wearer while protecting the wounds for at least six weeks.
Currently, women who have undergone surgery are simply recommended to wear a "sports bra". Such bras are structured to provide some support for breasts and to prevent some bounce during high impact activities. The sports bra is not, however, designed for use after surgery, as, on such occasions, the breasts need to be completely free from motion.
The present invention seeks to provide a brassiere designed specifically for use after breast surgery.
Statement of invention
According to one aspect of the invention, there is provided a brassiere for use after surgery, comprising two encapsulation cups having means to attach on the inside thereof a further padding material.
Preferably the padding material is a gel or gel-like material.
Preferably the gel is in the form of a pad. Preferably the gel is a silicone gel. Alternatively the gel could be an aerogelT1.
Preferably the attachments means comprises a VelcroT strip.
A gel pad is preferably attached to the inside of each cup at a location overlapping, in use, the scar or scars of the wearer. Alternatively or additionally a gel pad may be attached to the inside of each cup at a location overlapping, in use, the arola of each breast.
Alternatively or additionally a pad may be provided on the inner surface of the strap extending between the cups.
The padding may cover the entire inner surface of the each cup.
In an alternative embodiment, a layer of gel may be provided integral with the inner surface of each cup.
Brief description of the drawings
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying figure which is a perspective view of a brassiere constructed in accordance with the invention.
Detailed description of preferred embodiments
The figure shows a bra 10 many of the features of which are standard, including straps 12, a back clip 14, and a back support 16. The bra 10 has two encapsulation cups 18 (just shown as simple cups in the figure) . The use of an encapsulation cup has been found to be extremely effective at reducing the total breast motion in all three dimensions.
Encapsulation has also been shown to be generally more effective in reducing discomfort to the user, at an otherwise very uncomfortable time.
The straps 12 of the bra 10 are adjustable and the cups 18 are not wired and are seemless to prevent soreness around the arola.
On the inside of each cup 18 is provided a velcroT'4 attachment to attach a gel breast pad 20 (depioted in dotted lines in the figure) . The attachment means, and thus the pad(s) 20 are able to be located at strategic positions within each cup 18 to overlap surgical scars; for example over the crease of the breast or around the arola. The gel pads protect the breasts and well as providing comfort while aiding the healing process of the wound to ensure minimum scarring and reduced scar size, thickness, firmness and colour.
The gel pad is preferably be a silicone gel or aerogelT (a synthetic porous material derived from a gel, in which the liquid component of the gel has been replaced with a gas) A further example gel material for the pad is a hydrogel which is natural and medically approved. Hydrogel pads are generally composed of 60-70% water with no silicone and have been found to help reduce tenderness, pain and pruritus (itching) associated with scarring. They have also been found to lessen erythema (redness surrounding the scar) It s well established that implants are heavier than normal breast tissue and can cause the breasts to sag if unsupported.
The velcroTA attachment allows the gel pads to be replaced with pads of other suitable materials at a later date when gel padding is no longer required. For example, the gel pads 20 could be replaced with lifting or booster pads once scarring has healed to enhance the breasts and give a fuller shape.
This may give the appearance of using an underwire bra even when there is no wire present.
The lifter/booster pads come in various sizes, depending on their application and consist of a fabric made of pure cotton with a mixture of well known brand materials such as LycraT, CoolmaxT, Polymides and SpandexTA. A stretchable absorbent fabric such as LycraT for example, will remove perspiration from the skin thereby helping to reduce irritation and rubbing -The fact that the gel pads 20 can be replaced by other pads of different material will allow the bra 10 to be used beyond the six weeks period advised after surgery.
As welt as providing support and comfort after surgery, the bra 10 will be designed with aesthetic considerations at the forefront in order that the user will feel good in the bra 10 to increase self-confidence in the wearer at a crucial time.
It is envisaged that the gel pad 20 could extend across the entire inner surface of each cup 18. In an alternative arrangement each cup is formed with an integral inner layer of gel. Furthermore, attachments may be provided on the inside surface of other parts of the bra 10, for example the straps 12, back support 16 or strap 22 extending between the two cups 18 to provide enhanced protection and comfort in those areas also.
It will be appreciated that the foregoing are merely an examples of embodiments and just some examples of their use.
The skilled reader will readily understand that modifications can be made thereto without departing from the true scope of the invention.
