The present invention provides a hinge assembly suitable for use in a storage shed formed from a plurality of sheet metal panels, and in particular a storage shed of the type comprising a substantially vertical fixed rear wall, a pair of substantially vertical fixed side walls, and an openable cover, said cover comprising an upper panel having a rear edge hingedly connected to an upper edge of the rear panel by means of said first hinge assembly and a substantially vertical front panel hingedly connected to a front edge of the upper panel by a second hinge assembly, whereby, when closed, the upper panel of the cover defines a downwardly sloping roof of the shed and the front panel defines a substantially vertical front wall of the storage shed, and, when open, the upper panel is pivoted about the first hinge assembly to extend substantially vertically upwardly and the front panel is folded about the second hinge assembly to lie against the upper panel. Such storage sheds may be provide a relatively low cost secure storage solution for bicycles, garden equipment or any other itents.
Each of the first and second hinge assemblies comprises first and second extruded hinge parts, each hinge part being formed from an elongate extrusion of aluminium or a similar metal (ahhough it is envisaged that other materials, such as plastics, may be used).
Three separate extrusions are used to form the two hinge assemblies. These are shown in Figures ito 3.
As shown in the drawings, the first hinge assembly of the storage shed comprises a first hinge part in the form first extrusion 10 as shown in Figure 1 and a second hinge part in the form a second extrusion 20 as shown in Figure 2, said second hinge part being adapted to fit within the first hinge part to retain the two parts together while permitting relative angular movement between the first and second hinge parts.
The second hinge assembly comprises a modified first hinge part, in the form of a third extrusion 30 as shown in Figure 3, and a second hinge part of the same type as that of the first hinge assembly, in the form of the second extrusion 20 shown in Figure 2.
The first extrusion 10 comprises, in cross-section, a pair of parallel spaced wall portions 11,12 for accommodating an upper edge of the rear wall of the shed, an arcuate portion 13 extending from an upper end of said spaced wall portions, said arcuate portion 13 terminating in a radial portion 14 extending inwardly from said arcuate portion 13, said radial portion 14 terminating in a channel portion 15. A further wall portion 16 extends from a end of the arcuate portion 13 adjacent the upper end of said spaced wall portions 11,12, said further wall portion 16 extending in a downwardly inclined direction.
The second extrusion 20 comprises, in cross-section, a pair of parallel spaced wall portions 21,22 for accommodating a rear edge of the upper panel of the shed, an arcuate portion 23 extending from an end of one of said wall portions 22, said arcuate portion 23 being dimensioned to fit within and against said arcuate portion 13 of said first extrusion 10, and a radial portion 24 extending radially inwardly from a distal end of said arcuate portion 23, said radial portion 24 terminating in a substantially cylindrical pivot portion 25 adapted to be received within said channel portion 15 of the first extrusion 10 when said second extrusion 20 is engaged with the first extrusion 10.
Said channel portion 15 of the first extrusion 10 is arranged in opposing relationship to said arcuate portion 13 of the first extrusion 10 such that said second extrusion 20 can be retained between said arcuate portion 13 and channel portion 12 of the first extrusion 10 with the pivot portion 25 of the second extrusion received within the channel 15 of the first extrusion and the arcuate portion 13 of the second extrusion 20 in sliding contact with an inner face of the arcuate portion 13 of the first extrusion 10.
