Firebridges; firebars. - The grate of a boiler furnace is formed of hollow firebars a bent to produce a dip or depression whereon a thick bed of fuel may lie, air passing through the bars to the space behind the firebridge b and between incandescent blocks e of refractory material, to mix with the gases from the fuel and complete the combustion. The air for primary combustion, supplied between the firebars, is regulated to produce CO, which is burnt behind the firebridge. The refractory blocks e are attached by side plates f to bars c hinged to a common rod d and resting on a support g; the blocks may be bevelled on each side to leave narrow slots for the air passing between them. These slots may extend transversely of the flue.
