Abstract
A folding structure consists of two frames 1, 2 joined at a pivot 3 and placed inside a bag or sack to free the user to have both hands free to fill it. The structure is self adjusting to allow for differences in bag/sack size. The pivot 3 may be sited below the half leg point of the frame. Feet 4 may be fitted to protect the bag.
Description
Bag Support This invention relates to a tool that is expanded inside a bag/sack to keep open the mouth of said bag/sack in an elevated position.
Most bags/sacks are not self supporting and require the user to devote one hand to holding the them open with varying degrees of success. This tool creates the combination of it and the bag/sack into a free standing structure so that the user can devote both hands to holding and filling the intended contents.
Other bag/sack supports tend to rely on a freestanding external structure which is more complex and requires additional operations to set up and take down for storage. This invention fits inside the bag/sack and uses gravity to produce a gentle expanding outward force slightly below the mouth. By using the bag as part of the structure, components are kept to a minimum. The reverse action is used to withdraw the tool and thereby fold it flat for storage or use on another bag/sack.
The reference numbers in this text are shown as numbered balloons on the drawing on the accompanied drawing The assembly consists of two frames, each formed in a flat plane and hinged one to the other. Both frames are similar in appearance and take the lines of three sides of a rectangle or square with the bottom horizontal missing.
The first frame consists of two vertical struts ref. 1 (hereafter called the Jegs) which are held apart by a horizontal beam ref. 2 (hereafter called the crossbar) at their top. The hinge axis ref. 3 is at least half way down the length of both legs, at right angles to the leg axis and in the same flat plane as the frame. The frame may be made in one piece or prefabricated in several pieces using brackets/elbows at the top corners where the legs join the crossbar.
The second frame can be identical to the first, or have a change in the length of leg, crossbar or both. This gives a choice of how it is manufactured or assembled. Shorter legs and crossbar means that, when stowed, it can nest within the first frame and pack flat for transport. A shorter crossbar means that the legs can be assembled inside the first frame with the crossbars butting against one another when stowed. Having identical geometry to the first frame means that, when assembled, one frame is displaced horizontally to the other. Both frames then have an inside and an outside leg.
The frames are drilled along the hinge axis to take two hinge pins, which may take the form of a rivet, bolt or rollpin. Having the hinge axis slightly below half leg length (biased towards the feet) makes the crossbars engage the inside of the bag and press outwards before the feet. This prevents the bag from slipping off the crossbars.
Some protection is required, to prevent the free ends at the bottom of the legs ripping the bag. This can take the form of separate feet ref. 4 using pipe blanks, bungs or moulded feet in plastic, rubber or similar non abrasive material.
Claims (6)
- Claims 1. A bag support tool that is deployed inside the bag and folds open using a scissor action to support the mouth of the bag in an open and elevated position.
- 2. A bag support tool according to claim 1 in which it self adjusts to accommodate variations in bag geometry.
- 3. A bag support tool according to claim 1 in which it uses the bag to create a stable framework.
- 4. A bag support tool according to claim 1 in which it is instantly ready for use with no clamps, clips or any additional operations being involved.
- 5. A bag support tool according to claim 1 in which it folds closed as it is removed and is free for storage or use on the next bag.Amendments to the claims have been made as follows: Claims 1. A bag support tool that is deployed inside the bag and folds open using a scissor action to support the mouth of the bag in an open and elevated position.2. A bag support tool according to claim 1 in which it self adjusts to accommodate variations in bag geometry.3. A bag support tool according to claim 1 in which it uses the bag to create a stable framework.4. A bag support tool according to claim 1 in which it is instantly ready for use with no clamps, clips or any additional operations being involved.5. A bag support tool according to claim 1 in which it folds closed as it is removed and is free for storage or use on the next bag.
- 6. A bag support tool according to claim 1 in which it can be removed from a bag filled with whatever contents without impediment and without disassembly. r c\J Co
