Grates.-In an open fireplace grate, particularly for burning coke or anthracite, the back and sides are closed and a large part of the fuel in front is supported on a raised plate or support, beneath which air is heated and passes to the rear part of the fuel. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the front fuel support comprises a number of horizontal tubes b extending from the front of the fireplace inwardly to varying distances, through which the air passes to the rear part of the fuel supported on the imperforate hearth a. The tubes may be bound or welded together, or cast in one piece; or the passages may be formed between two plates or members, or by a series of arches in a plate resting on the hearth or attached to a base. The passages may be funnel-shaped and provided with internal ribs or gills. The tubes may be replaced by a removable plate supported above the hearth and having an irregular inner edge, as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 1. In a modification, the fuel-holder may comprise bottom side and back plates carrying the front raised plate, the whole device being removable with the ashes. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the front fuel-supporting plate b<1> is provided with end supports or feet b<3> and an upturned portion b<2> to support the front of the fuel. 'The front plate may be made in parts so as to be adjustable to different sizes of grate, the form shown in Fig. 7 comprising end portions b', b<6> telescoping on a central part b and carrying pivoted segmental parts b<1>, b<8> which may be adjusted to the angular form of the grate. Fig. 8 shows a further modification, in which the front supporting plate b is inclined and a grid f extends downwardly from it to the hearth; bars g may be provided above the top front edge. The flow of air through the passage formed beneath the front plate may be regulated by a shutter or the like.
