Abstract

247,911. General Motors Research Corporation, (Assignees of Summers, C. E.). Feb. 20, 1925, [Convention date]. Crank-shafts.-In means for counteracting torsional vibration due to intermediate drive &c. in crank and other shafts of motor boats and cars, airships, &c. one crank-web &c., for example the second web 15 on a six-throw shaft which also carries a fly-wheel D has pivoted thereto on a pin 11, preferably offset from the main shaft axis 13, a vibration-balancing block 10. Stiff plate springs 14 are supported at their ends in the block 10 and bear centrally on saddles 24 which bear on a plate secured to the flat side of the web 15. The shapes and masses of the parts are so arranged as not to interfere with the static balance of the crank-shaft. The masses and the strengths of the springs are so arranged that when the frequency of vibration due to the intermittent drive synchronises approximately with the natural frequency of the crank-shaft, the body 10 is set in oscillation with its vibration lagging behind that of the shaft, preferably in such a manner as directly to opposite the shaft vibrations. At other frequencies, the stresses produced by vibration, both of the shaft and of the block 10, are negligible.
